After Ryan Hurst’s injury forced a recast, Prime Video’s God of War has named a new Kratos—just not the one you were picturing.

Four months into filming in Vancouver, original lead Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep during a late-June stunt, a serious injury that made continuing impossible. Production had started in February, and the pause left Prime Video ’s live-action take on God of War without its Kratos — until now.

Dave Bautista has finalized a deal to take over the role of Kratos in Prime Video’s series, according to Variety. The recast hands one of gaming’s most recognizable characters to an actor known for physicality and presence, and resets the show’s path back to cameras.

Ryan Hurst exited after tearing his bicep during a stunt four months into filming.

Bautista’s timing is tight but not unprecedented for him: the former pro wrestler has been in heavy training recently — including prep tied to Highlander — which should serve him well stepping into Kratos’ grueling, axe-swinging world. Production is expected to restart in mid-October.

The series is keeping director Frederick E.O. Toye on board, per Variety. Toye helmed the first two episodes with Hurst and is expected to do the same with Bautista. His recent credits include four episodes of Shōgun — among them the show’s Emmy-winning finale — plus installments of The Boys and Fallout .

Story and scope

Prime Video has already committed to a two-season order for God of War. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner, steering a series that follows Kratos and his 10-year-old son Atreus on a journey through the Norse realm to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Beneath the monsters and mythology is a father-son story — a dad trying to shape a young god, and a kid nudging his father toward humanity.

With game adaptations surging — from HBO ’s The Last of Us to Prime Video’s own Fallout — God of War arrives with sky-high expectations. Cameras are slated to roll again in Vancouver in mid-October, per Variety.
