Plans in play for Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon reunion, says The Walking Dead boss
The Walking Dead boss weighed in on whether a reunion could actually wrangle Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and other fan favorites back together.
At MultiCon 2026, franchise chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said he’s thinking big about where The Walking Dead goes next — and yes, that includes the dream scenario of Rick Grimes crossing paths with Daryl Dixon again. Speaking with The Direct, Gimple also stressed that he’s pulling back on the sheer volume of shows to sharpen the focus on quality.
“Well I still dream of it, and I will say we have all sorts of plans in play,”
Gimple stopped short of promising a near-term crossover. He told the outlet it’s not the right moment for a convergence because the universe is still “in the middle” of its saga, and he emphasized that the end of the TV storyline is a long way off.
Scaling back the spinoffs
The AMC zombie universe has grown fast this decade — five new shows launched in the 2020s, with as many as three seasons of spinoffs rolling out in a single year. Gimple indicated that pace is changing. With The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon coming to an end and Dead City likely to wind down next, the aim is to concentrate on just one or two series at a time instead of a constant flood.
That’s a big shift from the franchise’s early days, when the 11-season flagship mostly ran alongside just one companion, Fear the Walking Dead. The post-finale years have scattered fan favorites across the map — literally.
- The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — Daryl’s trek through Europe, later joined by Carol.
- The Walking Dead: Dead City — Maggie and Negan fighting to survive in New York.
- The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — a limited series continuing Rick and Michonne’s story.
- Tales of the Walking Dead — a six-episode anthology; a second season hasn’t been confirmed.
All told, the franchise has already delivered 14 TV seasons in the 2020s — double the seven seasons released in the six years before that.
