Who killed Ruth in The Oval? The knife was missing from Nancy Hallsen's kitchen before the body was even found
A stabbing, a missing seven-inch kitchen knife, and a suspect who wouldn't call the police kicked off the longest-running mystery in Tyler Perry's The Oval. Here's how the Ruth storyline actually resolved, and how the answer ended up powering an entirely separate show.
The Ruth mystery is the rare TV whodunit where the correct answer is a technicality. In season 1 of Tyler Perry's The Oval, which premiered on BET on October 23, 2019, Ruth — Barry Hallsen's cult-entangled ex and the mother of his daughter Callie — turns up stabbed to death. Barry identifies the body himself.
Nobody killed her. Ruth staged the whole thing.
The evidence pointed one way
The show built its case against Barry (Vaughn W. Hebron) with real commitment:
- The weapon — the detective tells Barry that Ruth was stabbed with a seven-inch kitchen knife.
- The kitchen — that same week, Nancy Hallsen (Ptosha Storey) reaches for her seven-inch knife to make Richard's lunch. It 's gone.
- The alibi — Barry wasn't home the night of the murder and lies to the detective about it, with his mother backing the lie through her teeth.
- The plant — a bloody knife and a stack of cash later materialize in Barry's bedroom. He stuffs the knife in his jacket, walks outside, and gets arrested with it on him.
By the midseason finale, Nancy was asking her son point-blank whether he killed Ruth. He wouldn't answer, then packed a bag.

The tell was standing right there
Ruth is played by Melissa L. Williams — who also plays Denise, the president's mistress, because the characters are identical twins. Williams herself nudged fans toward the trick on social media, as Showbiz Cheat Sheet reported in February 2020:
"Soooooo the plot thickens… What happened to Ruth?" she teased, alongside questions about the First Lady studying Denise's Instagram.
The twin casting seeded exactly the right doubt: a grieving ex-boyfriend identifying a body is not the same thing as a confirmed death. Denise, for the record, was demonstrably alive at that point — her own, entirely separate murder came later in the season.
The actual answer
Ruth was alive the whole time. She staged her death with the help of the Rakudushis, the cult she belongs to, vanished with Callie, and framed Barry on the way out. Season 2 sealed it: in the episode "The Fencer," Nancy pieced together that the planted cash was Ruth's money, stashed alongside the bloody knife — a setup from the start.
The confirmation didn't even come from The Oval first. It came from a programming schedule: BET+ launched the spin-off Ruthless on March 19, 2020, starring a very not-dead Ruth Truesdale.
Whose body Barry actually identified is the one detail the franchise never itemized on screen — the cult handled the logistics, and the show moved on.
Where Ruth is now
Ruthless has outlasted the mystery that spawned it by six years. The spin-off follows Ruth inside the Rakudushi compound, opposite cult leader The Highest (Matt Cedeño), and is currently in season 6 on Paramount+ — the first half wrapped with a midseason finale on August 25, 2026, with the FBI closing in on the compound.
For the record: the woman whose murder investigation nearly sent Barry to prison has now headlined 115-plus episodes of her own show. Barry, meanwhile, exited The Oval after season 4.
