Seven seasons after the pilot, The Chi's Kevin left at 19 — what happened to him on screen
What happened to Kevin on The Chi, explained in full — how the show wrote out Alex Hibbert after seven years in the role, what the actor said about leaving at 19, and where the character stood by the time the series finished its run in 2026.
Alex Hibbert was 12 when The Chi premiered on Showtime on January 7, 2018 — fresh off playing young Chiron in the Oscar- winning Moonlight. By September 2023 he was 19, seven years into playing Kevin Williams, and ready to stop. The show gave him something most long-running dramas don't hand departing leads: an exit where nobody gets shot.
How the show wrote Kevin out
Season 6 was an expanded 16-episode run split into two halves, and Kevin's farewell landed in episode 8 — the midseason finale, which aired the weekend of September 23, 2023. On screen, Kevin's gaming storyline paid off: he took a job in the video game industry in Los Angeles, threw a going-away party, and said goodbye to the South Side on his own terms.
"I'm forever grateful for Chicago. It made me who I am," Kevin told the party crowd, in a speech reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, before promising to make everyone proud and hugging his mom Nina (Tyla Abercrumbie).
For a character who spent season 1 witnessing a murder and testifying about it, a job offer and a hug is about as gentle as this show gets.

What Alex Hibbert said about leaving
Hibbert confirmed the same weekend, via a long Instagram post, that Kevin's exit was also his own. He thanked the people who'd watched him grow up on camera, noted he'd been with this cast since he was 12, and framed the move as a career decision — new projects, new challenges. No feud, no firing, no statement from anyone contradicting him.
"I'm going to miss Kevin, but I will cherish the memories and experiences forever," he wrote.
His résumé outside the show backs up the career-move reading:
- Moonlight (2016) — his screen debut, Best Picture winner, filmed when he was 11.
- Black Panther ( 2018) — a small role in the year The Chi premiered.
- Good Burger 2 (2023) — released on Paramount+ two months after his Chi exit.
Did Kevin ever come back?
Once. The Chi ended for good with season 8 — the series finale, "The Last Dance," dropped on Paramount+ on July 24, 2026, capping a run of more than 80 episodes. Kevin returned for it, showing up at the wedding of Emmett (Jacob Latimore) and his sister Kiesha (Birgundi Baker) and walking her down the aisle.
The reception was mixed. Reel Chicago's finale review argued the return "should have carried far greater weight" given that Kevin was the character through whom audiences first entered the show, and that his actual screen time amounted to a nostalgic hello alongside Jake and Papa rather than a storyline.
Where that leaves the character
Canonically: alive, employed, in California, and on good terms with everyone — a rarity on a show that killed Coogie, Brandon, and a long list of others across eight seasons. Kevin Williams is one of the few Chi originals whose story simply ran out of runway rather than blood.
For the record: Hibbert spent seven of his first nineteen years playing the same character. The gaming-job exit means that if anyone ever wants a spinoff, the door was left wide open — and in Los Angeles, conveniently close to the studios.
