Kevin Federline stands by Britney Spears as she reportedly checks into rehab, glad she’s seeking help—and that it’s her decision.

Britney Spears has checked herself into treatment, and Kevin Federline is publicly backing the move. Given their history and the recent DUI, this update lands with a mix of relief and a lot of context.

Where things stand now

Over the weekend, a rep confirmed to Us Weekly that Spears, 44, voluntarily entered a treatment facility. On Monday, April 13, Kevin Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told TMZ that Kevin supports the decision and is glad it appears to be Britney’s call, not something forced on her.

"The key is that whatever the recommended treatment plan is that she follows it and completes it."

How we got here

This comes a little more than a month after Spears was arrested for driving under the influence near her home in Ventura County, California. Right after the arrest was confirmed, on March 4, her rep called it an unfortunate and inexcusable incident, said she will comply with the law, and framed it as a possible first step toward long-overdue changes in her life. The rep also said her sons would be spending time with her and that loved ones were putting together an overdue, needed plan to set her up for better long-term well-being.

Two days later, on March 6, Kaplan told TMZ that Kevin hoped for the best and, if help was needed, hoped she would not resist it or the people trying to help her. He also raised the obvious question: is this a one-time thing or not?

The long, messy backdrop

Spears and Federline share two sons — Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19 — but they have kept their distance for years. The two married in October 2004; Spears filed for divorce in November 2006 citing irreconcilable differences, and the split was finalized in 2007.

In October 2025, Federline released a memoir about his life and marriage to Britney called 'You Thought You Knew.' He pushed back on accusations about his motives, telling Us Weekly at the time that money was not the point and that if Britney could tell her story, he could tell his. Spears’ team did not love that. Her rep said Kevin and others were once again profiting off her, noted it arrived after his child support ended, and emphasized that Britney cares about her kids’ well-being and had already told her own story in her memoir.

For anyone wondering whether that book drama triggered the DUI: a source told Us that while the memoir upset Britney and did not help, her issues predate the book.
