Obsession’s Oscar campaign will put one actor front and center — but which one?

Focus Features is building its awards run for Obsession around Inde Navarrette, who will be campaigned for Best Actress this season for her turn as Nikki in Curry Barker’s hit horror film, according to Variety. The studio’s push is described as a broad, across-the-board play for Barker’s movie, which has been a box-office force this year.

It ’s not just Best Actress. Per the report, Focus is targeting a slate of 16 Oscar categories, elevating key cast and department heads alongside Barker, who is being put forward in multiple fields.

The categories on Focus’ list

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director — Curry Barker
  • Best Actress — Inde Navarrette
  • Best Actor — Michael Johnston
  • Best Supporting Actor — Cooper Tomlinson

Focus Features is mounting an awards push in 16 Oscar categories for Obsession.

Variety notes the studio is centering the campaign on Navarrette’s breakout — a strategy meant to pull the film into the wider conversation across crafts and above-the-line races. Barker, who wrote and edited Obsession in addition to directing, is positioned prominently across those categories.

The film’s commercial profile is part of the pitch: it’s been a box-office standout, which the report says has “recently emerged as the decade’s highest-grossing original film.” With that momentum, Focus is making Navarrette the face of the movie’s awards run “for the upcoming months,” per Variety.
