What happened to Larry the Cable Guy? The rumors got loud enough that his rep had to answer
Search his name and the autocomplete gets grim fast. Death rumors, health rumors, and — as of summer 2026 — a viral political statement he never wrote.
None of it is true. Daniel Lawrence Whitney, 63, is alive, still touring theaters, and last voiced Mater in the Disney+ series Cars on the Road in 2022. The most recent rumor, a June 2026 post attributing an anti-Trump statement to him, was traced by Snopes to a completely different person.
The fake statement
The post circulated on Facebook, Instagram, and X in June and July 2026, quoting him asking Trump supporters to unfollow him and calling the president a "malignant, racist, corrupt man." Snopes found no trace of it on his official accounts or in any reporting.
What they did find: a February 6, 2026 Threads post from musician Rosanne Cash that opened with the exact same wording and went somewhere else entirely. Nearly identical versions of the fake post were also attached to Paul McCartney and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The McCartney version was the earliest one Snopes could date, which points at a template — the kind of engagement-bait post built to drive clicks to ad-stuffed blogs.
The death hoax, which keeps coming back
This one has a longer history. In July 2023, tribute posts spread claiming he'd died at 60. Some versions added sleep apnea and diabetes to the story. He shot all of it down himself on Twitter on July 24, 2023, noting he was:
"still alive and currently putting icy hot on 65 percent of my body," he wrote, after struggling to put his socks on.
He also mentioned the rumor seems to make the rounds roughly once a year. It has.
What he's actually been doing
- Touring — regular theater dates across the U.S., including a run through 2025 and into 2026.
- Cars — voiced Mater in Cars on the Road on Disney+ in 2022, after three feature films and a decade of Cars Toons shorts.
- Radio — Jeff and Larry's Comedy Roundup, his SiriusXM channel with Jeff Foxworthy.
- Git-R-Done Foundation — the charity he runs with his wife Cara, which he told Fox News in 2020 had given away close to $9.5 million, mostly to children's and veterans' causes.
Why he's an easy target
He's recognizable, he's been off network television since Only in America ended on History in 2013, and his politics are public enough that a fabricated political statement gets shared before anyone checks. That combination — famous, low current news volume, politically legible — is exactly what the hoax template selects for.
For the record: he hasn't released a solo stand-up special since Remain Seated in 2020. The next real Larry the Cable Guy news will almost certainly arrive quieter than the fake kind.
