After a soul-scorching Season 4 that hurled Mark Grayson from the Viltrumite warfront to the underworld, Invincible now faces its toughest twist yet: a major cast departure poised to reshape Grayson’s world.

Invincible season 4 did not go easy on Mark Grayson, and it did not go easy on the cast list either. Between a major recast and a high-profile exit, there are a few behind-the-scenes wrinkles worth unpacking while we look ahead to where Prime Video is taking this thing next.

The William recast that even the original actor can’t explain

William Clockwell, one of Mark’s closest friends and the show’s steady human lens on all the world-ending chaos, was voiced by Andrew Rannells for the first three seasons. In season 4, the role shifted to Brandon Scott Jones.

Here’s the surprising part: Rannells says he doesn’t know why he was replaced. In a new chat with The Direct, he put it like this:

"I’m not exactly sure why. I think there was maybe a little restructuring and they... I was a guest star, and there were a lot of guest stars that didn’t end up coming back for the fourth season. So I’m not exactly sure why, but I was happy to be a part of the first three."

So, the official explanation isn’t out there. Rannells suggests it might have been a broader shake-up of guest roles, but neither the show nor Prime Video has spelled out the reasoning.

Another departure: Aaron Paul bows out

Aaron Paul exited the series after voicing Powerplex, saying the role was taking a toll on his mental health. It’s a tough loss for the bench, but it’s also the kind of boundary you want artists to set for themselves.

Where season 4 left Mark

On screen, season 4 was a lot. Mark went at the Viltrumite Empire hard, took a literal trip to the underworld, and made some brutal calls in the name of protecting Earth — the kind of choices that make you wonder how much of yourself you’re going to have left when the dust settles.

What’s next: season 5 and the long game

Season 5 is officially on the books for 2027. Without getting into spoiler weeds, there’s plenty of fresh trouble coming for Mark. Thragg and the Viltrumites have slipped into human society and are aiming to grow their empire the old-fashioned way — by having kids with Earth’s population. Mark’s cut a fragile truce with them, but it feels like a cease-fire with a very short fuse.

As for how long Invincible might run, creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman has floated that it could take around seven to eight seasons to cover the Image Comics saga properly — maybe even nine to ten if things stretch. Considering how savage the fights have already been, comic readers know we’ve only skimmed the surface.

The headline: season 5 lands in 2027, the cast shuffle is real (and a bit mysterious), and Mark’s problems are only getting bigger. Business as usual in the bloodiest corner of Prime Video.
