Who voices the Joker in Batman: Caped Crusader? The season 1 tease and season 2 are two different actors
If you went looking for the Joker in the Batman: Caped Crusader cast list after that season 1 stinger, you probably came up empty. There's a reason for that — and the answer changed entirely between seasons.
Matthew Needham voices the Joker in season 2. The Caped Crusader Joker who appeared in the last 30 seconds of season 1 was voiced by John DiMaggio, the same actor who plays Detective Harvey Bullock across the series. Amazon revealed Needham's casting at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, days before season 2 dropped.
The season 1 tease
The reveal came at the very end of "Savage Night," episode 10, which landed with the rest of season 1 on Prime Video on August 1, 2024. After the final shot of Batman, the episode cuts to a remote shack where a group of victims lie on the floor with rictus grins, injected with an early version of laughing gas while someone studies the results.
Chemistry sets in the background. A low, unamused voice. Not much face.
That version of the character was uncredited in the season 1 cast list, which is why Joker searches turned up nothing at the time.
Who Matthew Needham is
Needham is best known as Larys Strong, the scheming Clubfoot of House of the Dragon. He appeared on the Comic-Con panel alongside Hamish Linklater (Batman) and Jamie Chung (Harley Quinn), plus executive producers James Tucker and Geoffrey Thorne, after a screening of the season 2 premiere.
His take is deliberately not the cackling Clown Prince. Needham plays the character straight and humorless, with a European accent — a nod to Conrad Veidt, whose face in the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs inspired the Joker's original 1940 comic design.

- Hamish Linklater — Batman/Bruce Wayne, returning from season 1.
- Jamie Chung — Harley Quinn, whose season 1 arc ended with an apparent death in "The Stress of Her Regard."
- John DiMaggio — back as Harvey Bullock, no longer pulling double duty as a supervillain.
- Wunmi Mosaku, Jason Watkins, Grey DeLisle, Krystal Joy Brown — among the returning and new ensemble.
Season 2 runs 10 episodes and premiered on Prime Video on July 31, 2026.
Is this Joker connected to Harley Quinn?
Not in the usual way. Caped Crusader introduced Dr. Harleen Quinzel as a manipulative psychiatrist with her own agenda, independent of any Joker relationship — a structural change from the Batman: The Animated Series version that showrunner Bruce Timm co-created in 1992.
Tucker has described this Joker as a new approach for anyone who knows the famous versions, while feeling familiar to readers of the earliest Batman comics. Which is to say: a serial killer with a chemistry background, working in a 1940s Gotham, played by a man doing none of the voices you expect.
