Why Hilary Swank Declined a Return to the Karate Kid Universe
Hilary Swank, known for her Oscar-winning roles, chose not to revisit her character from The Next Karate Kid in the hit streaming series Cobra Kai, prioritizing another commitment instead.
Hilary Swank, a two-time Academy Award winner, was recently offered the chance to revisit one of her earliest film roles, but she decided to pass. Swank, who first gained major recognition for her performances in Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, once played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid. While her later career has been filled with critical acclaim, it ’s easy to forget her involvement in a franchise that started with the beloved 1984 classic The Karate Kid.
From Franchise Spinoff to Streaming Revival
The original Karate Kid, directed by John Avildsen, became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring several sequels. By the time the third installment rolled around, Ralph Macchio’s character was starting to feel a bit too old for high school, and the series was losing steam. In an effort to breathe new life into the franchise, Columbia Pictures introduced a new lead with The Next Karate Kid. This time, Swank stepped in as Julie, a troubled teen who finds guidance and discipline through Mr. Miyagi’s karate lessons. Pat Morita returned as the wise mentor, but the rest of the cast was new to the saga.
Despite the fresh direction, the film struggled both critically and at the box office. It marked a low point for the series, and Swank likely didn’t expect to revisit the role. The franchise later saw a reboot in 2010, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, but Swank’s character was left behind.
Cobra Kai’s Success and the Missed Reunion
Years later, the story found new life with the streaming series Cobra Kai. What began as a modest project on YouTube Red quickly gained traction, eventually moving to Netflix and drawing in a new generation of fans. The show brought back many familiar faces from the original films, focusing on Johnny Lawrence’s journey and his complicated relationship with Daniel LaRusso.
With the series’ growing popularity, fans speculated about the return of other characters from the franchise’s past. Swank’s Julie Pierce seemed like a natural fit for a guest appearance. However, according to co-creator Josh Heald, Swank declined the invitation, saying she made
“a respectful pass on even the idea of a meeting”
due to her commitment to another project at the time.
The Franchise’s Future and Swank’s Legacy
With Cobra Kai wrapping up its final season and the latest theatrical sequel, Karate Kid: Legends, underperforming at the box office, it appears the franchise may be winding down. Swank’s decision to step away from her old role seems final, at least for now. Her early days as Julie Pierce remain a unique chapter in a career defined by powerful, award-winning performances.
