Andrew Garfield will lead a new period drama film — as a legendary outlaw you definitely know.

A new clip for The Uprising posted on X comes stamped with one line under the title — “Witness the rise of Robin Hood” — and that’s the reveal: Andrew Garfield is playing the legendary outlaw. The period drama is directed by Paul Greengrass and positions Robin Hood’s beginnings inside real history rather than pure myth.

The film is set against the 1381 English Peasants’ Revolt and follows Wat Tyler, a farmer who leads a rebellion against crushing taxes and abuse. The footage shows Tyler confronting a hardline collector as tensions boil over.

“You pay your taxes, or you lose your hand.”

A bumpy road to the screen

This project has changed shape more than once. It started life as The Hood with Benedict Cumberbatch attached to star; he exited in early 2025. Matthew McConaughey then came aboard as the lead when the film was retitled The Rage, before departing as well. Garfield joined later in 2025, and the movie took on its current title, The Uprising.

He’s joined by an ensemble that includes:

  • Woody Norman
  • Thomasin McKenzie
  • Jamie Bell
  • Cosmo Jarvis
  • Tom Hollander
  • Stephen Dillane
  • Jonny Lee Miller
  • Katherine Waterston

A first look is out now, with the movie set for release on September 11, 2026 .
