Eight showed up for one episode of Stranger Things in 2017, split the fanbase, and disappeared for eight years. Linnea Berthelsen has now explained how the Duffers got her back for the final season and what she had to do to keep it secret.

Kali Prasad was the character Stranger Things fans voted least likely to ever come back. She was also the one hiding behind the last locked door in the Upside Down.

Linnea Berthelsen introduced Eight in "Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister," the season 2 episode that aired October 27, 2017 and promptly became the most argued-about hour the show had made. She didn't appear again for eight years.

How they got her back

Berthelsen signed her season 5 contract roughly three years before the episodes aired. At the first table read in December 2023, the Duffer Brothers kept her hidden in a separate room while the rest of the cast read episodes one through three, then walked her in for episode four. Her parents and a few close friends knew. Nobody else did, including people she was in Atlanta with for nine to ten months of shooting.

The problem was her hair. Kali's head is shaved on screen, and Berthelsen asked for it to be done for real, on camera, in a scene directed by Frank Darabont.

"When I went to birthday parties or something I had a pretty interesting wig," Berthelsen told Vogue Scandinavia in 2026. Netflix 's hair department made her six of them.

What Eight is doing in the final season

She's the reason Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) is still in business. Here's the sequence:

  • Episode 4Hopper and Eleven force the door at the Upside Down military base expecting Vecna, and find Kali wired to IVs with her head shaved.
  • Episode 5, "Shock Jock" — the flashback showing how she got there, including the shaving.
  • Episodes 6 and 7 — Kali lays out Kay's program: Brenner's experiments restarted, her blood transfused into pregnant women, and results too weak. Only Eleven's blood would work.
  • Episode 8, "The Rightside Up" — 128 minutes, released December 31, 2025, with Kali, Hopper, and Eleven tracked into the Upside Down lab.

Her conclusion is the ugly one: as long as she and Eleven are alive, someone will always come for them, so both of them need to stay in the Upside Down when it goes.

How it ends for her

Lieutenant Robert Akers (Alex Breaux) takes Kali and Hopper and threatens to kill her unless Hopper gives up Eleven. Murray destroys the military's sonic weapon, Eleven's powers come back, and in the scramble Akers shoots Kali anyway. Eleven takes over his mind and makes him turn the gun on himself. Kali bleeds out on the lab floor.

Except the epilogue undercuts it. Mike, mid-D&D game, argues that a dying Kali burned her last strength projecting a fake Eleven into the portal so everyone would believe El died with the Upside Down.

"I think she definitely dies… and for a very specific reason," Berthelsen told NME in January 2026. Her read: Kali sacrificed herself once she trusted that Eleven had people.

For the record: TVLine called Kali perhaps the most polarizing character the show could possibly have brought back. Berthelsen's last day on set was a group scene, three hours of it spent standing next to Winona Ryder.
