Who killed JJ in Outer Banks? The killer finally gave Kiara his reason in the final season
JJ Maybank's death ended Outer Banks season 4 and defined the entire final season. Here's who was responsible, the explanation the show finally puts on the record in season 5, and how the series settles the account.
Outer Banks ended its fourth season with the Pogues in Morocco and one of them not coming home. Season 5, all ten episodes of which dropped on Netflix on August 20, 2026, spends its entire runtime on the consequences.
JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) was stabbed to death by Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) in the season 4 finale. Groff is his biological father — a fact JJ had learned only weeks earlier.
How season 4 got there
Season 4 dismantled JJ's identity before it killed him. The reveal: Luke Maybank wasn't his father. JJ was the son of Groff and Larissa Genrette, of the wealthy Genrette family, adopted out at birth in a move that helped cover up his mother 's murder. A boy who had defined himself entirely as a Pogue found out he was born a Kook.
Creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke told Netflix's Tudum in November 2024 that they had always planned for JJ to die, and that the parentage twist was built to hurt.

The finale put the two of them in a standoff over the Blue Crown, with Kiara as leverage. JJ handed over the crown and told Groff he already had what he needed. Groff let Kiara go — then stabbed him anyway, throwing back the time JJ and his friends had left him at the bottom of a well without a rope. JJ died in Kiara's arms. His last words were about taking care of the others.

The reason Groff eventually gives
Season 5 puts the question in Kiara's mouth. Groff had the crown. He had his escape. JJ had already surrendered. So why?
Groff's answer, delivered to Kiara: "You have things I'll never have."
That's it. That's the motive. Deadline noted in its finale interview with the creators that Groff shows no real remorse about it at any point in the season — he spends the year chasing the Blue Crown to resurrect JJ's mother, the wife he had killed, rather than the son he stabbed.
How it gets settled
Kiara (Madison Bailey) drives the whole final season. She hesitates on her first chance at Groff in Dubrovnik. He throws her off a boat in the Adriatic; John B pulls her out.
The finale plays out during Hurricane Cassandra. Groff steals the Royal Merchant gold and commandeers a yacht near Blackstone Manor. Kiara stows away, stabs him in the side, loses the upper hand, then hits a winch control that hauls him up the mast. The mast snaps in the storm. She cuts the rope with the knife he used on JJ, and it drags him under.
Madison Bailey told TV Insider she'd wanted Kiara to be the one since she learned what was coming.
For the record: the Pogues recover the gold from the wreck, buy back the Maybank land, and John B and Sarah name their son JJ.
