The Real Reason Soldier Boy Missed The Boys Finale — And What’s Next for Jensen Ackles’ Supe
The Boys goes out in a blaze as Butcher and his crew storm the White House, Homelander finally falls, and most arcs slam shut—except for Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, the explosive loose end still ticking.
I know, I know — you watched The Boys finale, you saw heads roll (literally and figuratively), and you were waiting for a certain World War II relic to stroll in and light the place up. He doesn’t. And that’s kind of the point.
Spoilers ahead for The Boys Season 5, Episode 8, 'Blood and Bone.'
Quick recap: Big swings, tidy endings, no Soldier Boy
The finale goes all-in. Butcher and the gang break into the White House, Homelander gets killed, and most of the regulars end up with something that looks a lot like a happy ending. Meanwhile, Soldier Boy — who helped set the whole table by giving his son the V-One earlier this season — is totally absent.
Where he went and why he sits this one out
Showrunner Eric Kripke actually flagged this ahead of time: Soldier Boy wasn’t going to show up in the finale. The in-story reason is simple. In the previous episode, Homelander stuffed him back into cryo-freeze. As far as anyone knew, Homelander was the only person who knew where that freezer was. The Boys also believed Soldier Boy was riding with his kid anyway, so neither side had a reason (or the time) to go wake him up for the last battle.
The strategic freeze
Putting him back on ice isn’t just a plot beat — it ’s a very TV-producer move. Freezing him keeps Soldier Boy on the board without complicating the finale. And the world around him is still very much alive: Vought hasn’t gone anywhere. In fact, Stan Edgar is back in the building, reinstated as interim CEO. With Vought continuing on, it’s only a matter of time before someone stumbles across that cryo-popsicle and decides to hit defrost.
So, when do we see him again?
Prime Video already has the next playground set up. The upcoming prequel series, Vought Rising, is set in the 1950s, with Jensen Ackles returning as Soldier Boy, Aya Cash back as Stormfront, and Mason Dye reprising Bombsight. It’s billed as an origin story, but I’d bet we get at least some material that jumps to the post-finale present. This universe loves a parallel timeline, and thawing him out there would be an easy swing.
- Vought is still operating, with Stan Edgar reinstated as interim CEO — which makes a future Soldier Boy revival plausible.
- The main show has hinted Stormfront might still be alive. If Vought Rising weaves past and present, don’t be shocked if Soldier Boy chases that thread, dovetailing with their 1950s storyline.
- Leaving him out of the finale keeps options open instead of closing the book with a definitive fate — probably the smarter long game for the Vought Cinematic Universe.
- All five seasons of The Boys are streaming now on Prime Video.
- Vought Rising is expected to debut in 2027.
Bottom line: Soldier Boy missing the big finish isn’t a snub — it’s setup. He’s benched, not retired.
