Why was Reacher recast? The two men who've played him could hardly be less alike

One Jack Reacher is 5'7" and does his own stunts out of what I can only assume is spite against physics. The other is a 6'2" wall of Alabama-shaped muscle who looks like he was grown for the part in a lab. The gap between them is roughly ten inches, two movies, and one author's very public change of heart.

The original sin: casting Tom Cruise

In the books, Jack Reacher is 6'5", 250 pounds, with hands the size of dinner plates — a man whose entire deal is that rooms go quiet when he enters them. In 2012, Paramount cast Tom Cruise, a man whose entire deal is charisma at any altitude. Book fans lost their minds. Even Dwayne Johnson later revealed he'd chased the part a decade earlier — "Bout 10yrs ago I went after the role, but Cruise got it " — which means Hollywood looked at The Rock and a 5'7" movie star and chose the movie star. For the role of a giant.

The Cruise films weren't bad — the 2012 one is a genuinely tidy thriller — but the sequel underperformed, and the fundamental problem never went away:

You can act your way into a lot of things. Eight inches of height is not one of them.

The author pulls the plug

The recast wasn't a studio decision so much as a Lee Child decision. Announcing the TV reboot, the author told BBC Radio (via Fox News) that "Cruise, for all his talent, didn't have that physicality," declared there'd be no more Cruise movies, and invited the aggrieved readers to help pick the next guy. Years later he was even blunter, telling The Independent of the original backlash:

"The readers, ultimately, were right."

Imagine being Tom Cruise and getting fan-fictioned out of your own franchise by the fandom's sheer collective insistence on tallness. Anyway —

Enter the slab

Amazon 's Reacher cast Alan Ritchson in 2020, and the difference is the whole point:

• Cruise's Reacher: compact, coiled, wins fights through precision and being Tom Cruise;
• Ritchson's Reacher: bursts out of flex cuffs as a warm-up, wins fights by existing at people;
• The books' Reacher: somewhere in between, but spiritually much closer to the man who eats an entire diner breakfast per chapter.

Child approved the casting personally and has since become Ritchson's loudest hype man, while the series became one of Prime Video 's biggest hits — so big that season 3 required a 7'1" Dutch bodybuilder just to give the man someone to look up at. The lesson, as ever: never come between book readers and a character's listed measurements.
