The Real Reason Carla and Dr. Cox Are Missing From the Scrubs Revival — And How Many Episodes They’ll Actually Return For
Fifteen years after leaving Sacred Heart, Scrubs scrubs back in on ABC as Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison reunite as J.D., Elliot, and Turk—this time steering a revival that pairs the original trio’s chemistry with a fresh class of interns.
Scrubs is back on ABC after 15 years, and yes, the gang is mostly here. The revival plants itself right where Season 8 left off, cleanly sidestepping that polarizing ninth season. Smart move. Reviews are strong, fans seem happy, and the show is built around the original trio — Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison — with a fresh batch of interns cycling through Sacred Heart.
About those missing favorites
If you have been wondering where Carla and Dr. Cox went, you are not alone. Judy Reyes has only popped up in two episodes so far, and John C. McGinley basically vanished after the premiere. The short version: they are both busy headlining other series. Reyes is a series regular on ABC's High Potential, and McGinley is tied up with HBO 's upcoming Rooster, which, fun wrinkle, comes from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence too.
Before you panic, early reporting always said Reyes would tally four episodes this season and McGinley would hit three. Translation: they are not done yet, and the back half of the season should lean on them more.
When they are back
IMDb episode credits — which are entered by the production, not random users — list Dr. Cox returning in Episode 8 and Carla in Episode 9, the season finale. Those are the locked-in appearances. Also worth keeping in mind: productions often keep surprise cameos off the public listings, so there could be an extra pop-in that does not show up until air.
Given Cox and Carla's long-running dynamic, Episode 8 feels like a prime spot for both to cross paths. And considering Dr. Cox kicked off the revival by handing the proverbial keys to JD in the premiere, it would be pretty wild if he skips the finale entirely.
Who else is coming back (and who is not)
- Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley): confirmed for Episode 8; slated for three total this season; currently a series regular on HBO's Rooster (from Bill Lawrence).
- Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes): confirmed for Episode 9, the finale; slated for four total this season; currently a series regular on ABC's High Potential.
- The Janitor (Neil Flynn): returning for a single guest spot, limited by scheduling. The finale is the logical bet, given his history with big send-offs.
- Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins): not in Season 1. Bill Lawrence says Kelso will return if ABC orders Season 2. Jenkins is 85 and stepped away from acting a few years back, which is why he could not take part in the revival.
The setup this time around
The revival keeps JD, Elliot, and Turk at the center while looping in a new intern class — basically classic Scrubs energy filtered through older, slightly wiser versions of the leads. It is a back-to-basics approach that plays a lot better than trying to re-litigate Season 9. No disrespect, but the show literally rebooted itself by ignoring it.
How to watch
New episodes air Thursdays on ABC, with next-day streaming on Hulu.
