Prime Video is on a tear: The Boys season 5 and Invincible season 4 are dominating the charts. Mark Grayson’s brutal saga will be back for season 5, but Homelander and Hughie are racing toward their final reckoning.

Prime Video has a couple of runaway hits right now, with The Boys blasting through its fifth and final season and Invincible season 4 still punching above its weight. Invincible is already locked for a season 5, but The Boys is on its victory lap. So what takes the spotlight when the live-action bloodbath finally bows out? Apparently, a talking cat named Kevin just muscled into the conversation.

So... what is Kevin?

Kevin is a new Amazon original adult animated series that Aubrey Plaza helped create. She also produces and voices a character. The show follows a cat named Kevin who gets blindsided when his human owners split up. He takes the breakup as a cue to reinvent himself and start a new life. The world has a BoJack Horseman vibe where animals talk and mix with humans like it is totally normal.

  • Voice/cameo roster includes Jason Schwartzman, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Aparna Nancherla, and Amy Sedaris, alongside Plaza.

How it is performing on Prime Video

On Amazon's latest Top 10, Kevin debuted at No. 8. It is an entirely new IP, so cracking the chart at all is impressive. It did not leap over the big guns like The Boys, Invincible, From, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, or Young Sherlock, but getting into the mix this fast is a win. The ranking data comes via FlixPatrol.

Is it any good?

Critics are split. On Rotten Tomatoes, Kevin sits at 63% as of now, which just squeaks into 'fresh' territory. Season 1 runs eight episodes. A season 2 has not been confirmed yet.

The behind-the-scenes nugget

Kevin is not just any cat. He is based on Aubrey Plaza's real-life former pet, which gives the show a slightly surreal edge if you know that going in. Plaza talked about pitching the series on The View and basically admitted it felt like unpacking an old relationship in a boardroom full of streamers.

"Pitching the show was a really full-circle, crazy moment. Because I was 19 when I met Joe. It kind of felt cathartic in a way, kind of like couples therapy, but 20 years later, in front of Amazon, Netflix and everyone. And we're not a couple. But yeah, it's crazy because that's actually what our cat looked like, Kevin. That is our cat. So, this is like an acid trip for me. A lot going on for me."

If that sounds a little wild, it is. The hook tracks: an emotionally messy cat comedy rooted in a very real ex-and-our-pet story is exactly the kind of offbeat premise that can resonate in adult animation.

Bottom line

With The Boys gearing up for its exit and Invincible already mapping out another season, Amazon clearly is not hurting for buzzy genre shows. Kevin sliding into the Top 10 suggests there is still real appetite for adult animation on Prime Video, not just for revivals but for brand-new weirdos, too. Eight quick episodes, a stacked voice cast, and a premise that is part breakup comedy, part feline self-actualization? If you are into that lane, Kevin is at least worth a test drive.
