Outer Banks season 5 ending answers the Pogues’ gold hunt and Groff’s fate
Outer Banks’ final chapter gives you surf-slashed showdowns—and a complete return to form.
Out in the teeth of Hurricane Sandra, Kiara Maybank stowed away on Chandler Groff’s hijacked boat and confronted him over JJ’s death as he tried to flee with the Royal Merchant gold. As waves pounded the deck, she rigged the sails and lines to hoist Groff into the air, then cut the rope, sending him into the water; lashed to heavy gear, he sank, ending his run as the Pogues’ last big threat.
Back onshore, Rafe Cameron used the storm as cover to yank Sofia out of jail, only to double back when he saw Sheriff Shoupe trapped under a fallen tree. After pulling Shoupe free and owning up to his past crimes, Rafe got an unexpected reprieve; Shoupe let him and Sofia bolt for South America rather than haul him in mid-disaster.
With Groff gone, Kiara had to abandon the sinking vessel and dump the gold to stay alive. She fired a flare and called out to JJ for strength as John B, Sarah Cameron, and Pope Heyward fought through the gale to haul her aboard, guiding everyone to the safety of the lighthouse.
When the skies finally cleared, the island was wrecked and power was out for weeks. With evacuations underway, the Pogues started daily dives to find the cache Kiara had cut loose — and hit pay dirt when John B spotted the $400 million haul on the seabed, enough for the crew to salvage every last bar.
After the storm
- Cleo resolved her immigration status thanks to the windfall, and Pope proposed as they planned a quieter future.
- Real-estate player Dale Zeasy was arrested after the post-storm legal shakeout exposed his fraudulent deals; the Pogues used their money to buy back stolen land across the island.
- John B and Sarah rebuilt the Routledge house; Pope brought Heyward’s Seafood back to life; Kiara reclaimed the Maybank property.
- Kiara landed a marine biology internship and set up a permanent beach memorial for JJ.
- A year later, Sarah welcomed a baby boy — named JJ.
- Rafe and Sofia said their goodbyes to Sarah and left the Banks for good.
The series’ final moments are all celebration: John B and Sarah’s official wedding, friends and family gathered as he rang his father’s brass bell, and the Pogues huddling for one last sunset photo.
“We are the Pogues. Our mission for life is to have a good time all the time. We went around the world looking for treasure, but in the end, we found everything we wanted right where we started. The Outer Banks. Paradise on earth.”
The complete run of Outer Banks is now streaming on Netflix.
