Netflix pitched Ransom Canyon as three ranching dynasties locked in a fight over Texas Hill Country land. That's accurate, but it undersells how tangled the setup is before anyone throws a punch.

Two of the three families are legally related to each other. Season 1 premiered April 17, 2025; season 2 dropped all eight episodes on July 23, 2026.

The short answer

The three families are the Kirklands, the Collinses, and the Fullers. Staten Kirkland owns the Double K Ranch. Davis Collins owns Bar W. Cap Fuller owns the Fuller Ranch. Staten's late wife Amala was Davis's sister, which makes the show's central rivalry a rivalry between brothers- in-law.

The families, sorted

  • The Kirklands — Staten (Josh Duhamel) runs the Double K, inherited from his grandfather. Wife Amala died of illness; son Randall died in a car crash before the series opens. Staten's father Sam (Brett Cullen) is a senator and not much of an ally.
  • The Collinses — Davis (Eoin Macken), Amala's older brother, plus ex-wife Paula Jo (Meta Golding) and son Reid (Andrew Liner). Davis is wealthy but not a real rancher. He wants Staten's land and Cap's land for a pipeline deal with Austin Water & Power.
  • The Fullers — Cap (James Brolin), wife Ruth in assisted living, and a dead son named Lincoln. The ranch has no obvious heir until Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) turns out to be Cap's grandson.

Why the in-law thing is half the problem

Davis gave Randall the sports car he died in. Reid is Staten's nephew and Randall's cousin. Staten hooks up with Paula Jo, his dead wife's brother's ex-wife, in a car. Davis dates Quinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly), who was Amala's best friend and is Staten's love interest.

Every land dispute in season 1 is also a family argument with a seating chart.

What season 2 changed

Cap died at the end of season 1, leaving Fuller Ranch to Yancy — who promptly proposed to Ellie Estevez while a woman claiming to be his wife walked into Gracie's. Eoin Macken and Andrew Liner are not back as series regulars, thinning the Collins side considerably. Staten opens the season unseated as trustee of his own family's ranch, six months on from where season 1 left off.

Showrunner April Blair told Netflix 's Tudum in 2026 that the new season is "really about community, rebuilding in the wake of that."

The fourth family nobody counts

The Brigmans aren't ranchers, so they don't make the official three — but Sheriff Dan Brigman's wife Margaret was driving the night Randall died, and Dan arrested her for it in the season 1 finale. Their daughter Lauren dated Reid Collins and then Lucas Russell.

Netflix renewed the show on June 24, 2025, roughly two months after it premiered, while several similarly performing series that launched the same season got canceled.
