Nia DaCosta, known for her work on The Marvels, hasn't let the mixed reactions from Marvel fans slow her down. As she gears up for the release of her horror sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, DaCosta took part in a Q&A session on Sony Pictures ' Reddit channel. When a fan asked which franchise she’d like to direct next, her answer caught many off guard. She expressed a strong desire to helm a live-action adaptation of Prime Video ’s Invincible.
The comic and cartoon are amazing. I know exactly how I'd want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera – and sex!
Invincible’s Story and Appeal
Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame, follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, as he learns the ropes of being a superhero from his father, Omni-Man, played by J.K. Simmons. Mark soon discovers that balancing his personal life with saving the world is far more complicated than he ever imagined. The series has already delivered three seasons, with a fourth set to debut in March 2026.
The show stands out for its raw, emotional storytelling and the intense relationship between Mark and his father. DaCosta’s vision for a live-action version promises to bring even more edge and realism to the story, focusing on the gritty and visceral aspects that set Invincible apart from other superhero tales.
Live-Action Rumors and Cast Hopes
Speculation about a big-screen adaptation of Invincible has been swirling since 2017, when Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg announced their interest in making it happen. Over the years, fans have wondered if Steven Yeun would reprise his role as Mark in a live-action format. When asked about the possibility, Yeun responded candidly,
Well, I am 40.
The interviewer suggested he could play Mark’s father instead, to which Yeun replied,
Yeah, we'll see. I love working with Robert. That comic is so great, and it goes so long and so deep. So, I'm excited to see that play itself out. Right now, we’re having a lot of fun making this show. Live action – who knows?
