Netflix Top 10 now includes Johnny Depp’s 2005 children’s classic
Johnny Depp’s 2005 classic just staged a comeback, sliding into Netflix’s Global Top 10 in 2026 — and you know which blast from the past we mean.
Netflix quietly added Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to its U.S. lineup in July, and the 2005 Tim Burton take on Willy Wonka almost immediately surged into the streamer’s Global Top 10 for movies. It ’s a fresh wave of attention for Johnny Depp ’s candy-coated oddball, with new viewers discovering the film and longtime fans pressing play again.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hit Netflix U.S. in July 2026 and quickly cracked the streamer’s Global Top 10.
Back to the factory
Burton’s glossy, slightly sinister spin on Roald Dahl’s classic follows kind-hearted Charlie Bucket as he snags a golden ticket and tours Wonka’s secretive factory alongside four far less well-behaved kids. The trip delivers edible set pieces, bizarre machinery and consequences that come swift and sticky.
- Freddie Highmore — Charlie Bucket
- Johnny Depp — Willy Wonka
- Helena Bonham Carter — Mrs. Bucket
- David Kelly — Grandpa Joe
- Christopher Lee — Dr. Wilbur Wonka
- Deep Roy — the Oompa-Loompas
Depp plays Wonka as a jittery, sugar-spiked manchild with prim manners and a queasy edge — a left-field choice that fits neatly into his long creative run with Burton, from Edward Scissorhands to Corpse Bride. The movie was a major hit on first release, pulling in more than $475 million worldwide in 2005, and it’s stayed a family- night staple on streaming ever since.
Next up: Scrooge
Depp’s return to the algorithm comes as he readies another larger-than-life literary figure: Ebenezer Scrooge. He stars in Ebenezer, a new take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from director Ti West — a tonal pivot from the Burton era — with a theatrical release set for November 13, 2026.
He even leaned into the role at San Diego Comic-Con in July, surprising fans outside the convention in full Scrooge regalia — Victorian overcoat, top hat, the works — and staying in character while addressing the crowd around a promotional setup. The in-costume cameo quickly became one of the weekend’s standout celebrity sightings.
Ebenezer opens in theaters on November 13, 2026.
