Invincible’s fourth season is going off-script. After episode four debuted a story not in the comics, Prime Video’s animated series has hurled an even bigger curveball as Mark Grayson squares up to the Viltrumite Empire.

Invincible has been swerving hard this season, and episode five keeps the wheel cranked. The show just pulled a pretty big character change from the comics that is going to matter a lot once the Viltrumite War really heats up.

Heads up: full spoilers for Invincible season four, episode five.

The big swing: Tech Jacket is Zoey now

Prime Video 's animated series introduces Tech Jacket into the fight against Thragg and the Viltrumite Empire, but not exactly how the comics did it. In the books, Tech Jacket is Zack Thompson. On the show, it's Zoey Thompson. Same last name, very different energy. The swap is clean and straightforward: new name, same armor, same power set.

If you need a refresher: Tech Jacket was created by Robert Kirkman back in 2002 for Image Comics, which actually puts the character on the page before Mark Grayson ever showed up. Kirkman later folded Tech Jacket into Invincible's comic run and made him a key piece against the Viltrumites. The show is keeping that core idea intact; they're just changing who is in the suit.

Episode five goes hard

The episode is called 'Give Us a Moment,' and it is anything but gentle. Zoey shows up as a serious ally, but her strength has limits when the heaviest hitters start flying. Conquest returns here, setting up the rematch fans have been itching for since the season three finale. And yes, the showdown gets grisly. Mark pushes himself to the edge to keep his family safe and try to keep the universe from falling apart. If you are squeamish, maybe brace yourself for the finale stretch.

How Zoey fits into the fight

Zoey makes it through the initial brawl with the Viltrumites and links up with Allen the Alien. The two take shelter aboard a Viltrumite ship, where Zoey uses her suit to mask them right on the surface of the vessel. It's a clever use of the armor and a reminder that, gender swap aside, Tech Jacket's toolkit is the same as in the comics. The show is clearly setting her up to matter going forward, especially as more heroes rally to take on Thragg's empire.

Quick context you might care about

  • Season four has been playing loose with the source in smart ways. Episode four was a fully original story not lifted from the comics, and episode five follows that trend with the Tech Jacket switch-up.
  • Tech Jacket has headlined multiple comic series from Kirkman. Like The Amazing Wolfman, a lot of that material never made it to the screen.
  • The Invincible comic wrapped in 2018, but the universe keeps rolling. Robert Kirkman and artist Ryan Ottley are back with an ongoing Battle Beast series.

Bottom line

Changing Zack to Zoey is a bold but tidy move that keeps the character's function in place while giving the show room to surprise. With Thragg looming and Conquest back in the mix, this is exactly the kind of shake-up that makes the Viltrumite War arc feel dangerous again.
