Hurry To Watch These 7 Oscar Winners Before They Leave Netflix In April
Perfect rewatch list.
It may seem like the Netflix library has every title you could ever want to watch. In reality, movies and shows leave the streaming giant every month. Some are dumped because not enough people are tuning in, others because their licensing agreements are expiring.
By May, more than 35 projects will be gone from the platform. Seven of them are Academy Awards winners. So this is a perfect opportunity to throw a big Oscars-style rewatch party.
Leaving April 24: The Hateful Eight (2015)
2016 Academy Awards: Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures
Both The Hateful Eight and the extended series will be taken down by the end of April. So a retrospective dedicated to Quentin Tarantino as a filmmaker feels like a must. Especially since on March 31st Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 start streaming on Netflix.
Leaving April 30: Apollo 13 (1995)
1996 Academy Awards: Best Sound & Best Film Editing
Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton play real-life astronauts who were part of the famous aborted Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970. When the spacecraft is severely damaged, their lives are on the line. Although the movie is almost 30 years old, it still has audiences on the edge of their seats.
Leaving April 30: Erin Brockovich (2000)
2001 Academy Awards: Best Actress
The film that won Julia Roberts her first and only Oscar is based on the true story of an unemployed single mother who almost single-handedly brought down a major corporation by suing it for groundwater contamination. Roberts' screen presence and acting in the film earned her an army of fans. And we can’t help but join it.
Leaving April 30: Joker (2019)
2020 Academy Awards: Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role & Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures
Todd Phillips' movie got us all obsessed with DC's Joker and Joaquin Phoenix. Now's a good time to revisit it, as the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, hits theaters on October 4. Looks like this year's Halloween will be flooded with a new wave of Jokers and Harley Quinns.
Leaving April 30: Jurassic Park (1993)
1994 Academy Awards: Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing & Best Visual Effects
Steven Spielberg's action masterpiece, set in a wildlife park where de-extinct dinosaurs dream of hunting down visitors, spawned a wildly popular franchise. If you've been thinking about a massive rewatch, this is your sign. Especially since The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III are also leaving Netflix in April.
Leaving April 30: Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
2013 Academy Awards: Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
David O. Russell's romantic tale with a touch of chaos and craziness is THE movie that made Jennifer Lawrence a star. Even though the movie only won one Oscar, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro's performances in it definitely deserve special mention and a rewatch.
Leaving April 30: Whiplash (2014)
2015 Academy Awards: Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Achievement in Film Editing & Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons (who won his first Oscar for the film) are stunning in their teacher-student dynamic, jazz is the third main character, the sound is something we've never seen in a movie before. Hands down, Damien Chazelle is insanely good at telling Oscar-worthy stories.
