Why did Spike leave in 28 Years Later? He left a baby and a note at the gate and never went back inside
The ending of Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later splits its hero from everything he set out to protect, and the reason unfolds across the film's entire final act. Here's what drives Spike's decision at the gate, what his note actually says, and how the sequel picks up the thread.
Twelve-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams) spends most of 28 Years Later trying to get somewhere: first to the mainland, then to the mysterious Dr. Kelson, then home. At the end of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 2025 film, he finally reaches the gates of Holy Island — and stops.
He deposits a newborn in a shopping basket, tucks in a note for his father, and walks back into infected Britain alone. The film spends its whole runtime explaining why.
What broke between Spike and the island
The short version is that everything Spike believed got contradicted within about a week:

- His father lied. Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) embellished Spike's first mainland trip into heroics — and Spike then caught him with another woman while his mother was sick upstairs.
- The outside world moved on. Erik, a stranded Swedish soldier, casually describes a functioning modern world beyond Britain's quarantine. The island's whole worldview shrinks on contact.
- His mother's death came with an education. Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) diagnoses Isla (Jodie Comer) with terminal cancer and eases her death with morphine, then adds her skull to his bone monument — treating death as something to face rather than outrun.
- The baby. Along the way, Isla helps a pregnant infected woman deliver an uninfected child. Spike names her Isla.
What the note says
Spike does return to the island — for a few minutes. He leaves the baby at the community gate with a note asking Jamie to look after her, explaining he needs time on the mainland to figure himself out.
Per the note, he plans to walk until he can no longer see the sea — and, as Popverse highlighted, promises he'll "return once he's ready."
The island's own rules make this legal, if extreme: residents can leave for the mainland whenever they want. No rescue party comes looking. Spike knows exactly what he's signing up for.
Then the tracksuits arrive
Minutes into his solo life, Spike gets swarmed by infected and cornered against a rock wall — at which point a blond man in a tracksuit and a crucifix appears, followed by an entire crew of identically dressed fighters who dispatch the horde with gymnastics while Teletubbies audio plays.
This is Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), the boy from the film's 2002-set opening scene, now leading a cult whose members are all named some variation of Jimmy.
He offers Spike a place in the group, and the film cuts to black.
Where it goes from here
The follow-up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, hit theaters on January 16, 2026, and picks up immediately: Spike is initiated into the Jimmies — via a forced fight — while Kelson's research takes the story somewhere new. It reached Netflix on March 31, 2026. Boyle himself directs the trilogy's final film, currently in development.
For the record: the boy who left the island to find himself got renamed within days. In Jimmy Crystal's gang, everyone is Jimmy — including, now, Spike.
