Fallout’s second season brings the terrifying Deathclaw to life with practical effects and puppeteers, ditching green screen for a more immersive experience.

Fallout ’s second season is set to raise the stakes with a new threat stalking the wasteland: the infamous Deathclaw. This towering, horned beast has haunted gamers for years, and now, it ’s ready to make its mark on television. But what’s really turning heads is how the show’s creators have chosen to bring this monster to life.

Bringing the Deathclaw to Life

Instead of relying on digital effects or green screens, the production team opted for a hands-on approach. Walton Goggins, who plays the Ghoul, shared his initial reaction to the creature’s design.

“I couldn’t wrap my head around it,”

he admitted, recalling his first look at Howard Cummings’ early sketches. But seeing the finished product—a massive puppet—changed everything.

“Thankfully, I didn’t have to look up into the rafters of a stage and imagine this, because we have puppeteers,”

Goggins explained.

“It’s not a green screen; there are puppeteers manning this thing. It’s cumbersome and it’s weird, but they’re doing the work to intimidate us. It’s incredible.”

Staying True to Fallout’s Tactile World

This commitment to practical effects fits right in with the show’s established style. From the start, Fallout has focused on creating a world that feels real and lived-in. The first season featured working Pip-Boys and even included authentic Vault documents on set, giving the cast and crew a tangible connection to the universe. The decision to use a physical Deathclaw puppet continues that tradition, making the danger feel all the more immediate for both actors and viewers.

Anticipation Builds for the New Season

So far, fans have only caught brief glimpses of the Deathclaw, most recently in the latest season two trailer. For longtime players who remember the perilous quarries of New Vegas, the sight of this creature is sure to bring back some intense memories. Even so, the excitement is building to see just how the show’s practical effects team will deliver on the promise of a truly terrifying Deathclaw.

Fallout season two premieres on Prime Video December 17. For those eager for more, there’s plenty to look forward to as the series continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in TV adaptations of beloved games.
