She certainly has all the powers of a greenseer.

Summary

  • Alys Rivers is hands down the most enigmatic character in House of the Dragon.
  • Fans have come up with several theories as to her hidden identity.
  • The most bizarre is that Alys is the Three-Eyed Raven and is looking for a successor.

Thanks to Daemon's long tenure at Harrenhal, Alys Rivers portrayed by Gayle Rankin has become perhaps the most intriguing and mysterious character in House of the Dragon. The black-haired healer-witch of House Strong, who appears in various corners of Harrenhal, seems much younger than she really is, and always knows much more than she is supposed to, has fueled much discussion in the Westeros fandom.

For example, until the episode Smallfolk, many fans thought that Alys was one of the ghosts rumored to wander the haunted halls of Harrenhal, seen only by Daemon. But when Alys actually helped the Targaryen prince gain influence in Riverrun by actively participating in the death of Lord Grover Tully, that theory was put to rest.

Yet, another, even more bizarre one was born. It says that Alys Rivers is actually the Three-Eyed Raven.

Who is the Three-Eyed Raven? A quick reminder

We know from Game of Thrones that dragons are not the only magical creatures in Westeros. There are the Children of the Forest, who live beyond the Wall; the skinchangers, who can 'possess' various animals and see through their eyes; and the greenseers, who can see the past, present, and future through visions.

The most notable member of the greenseers is the Three-Eyed Raven ('Crow' in J.R.R. Martin's books). His powers are particularly strong, and according to canon he is not a single person, but an entity that changes bodies when the previous iteration dies, while retaining all the memories of its past lives.

In Game of Thrones, Bran Stark becomes the Three-Eyed Raven (and the last greenseer of the realm) after the previous host dies.

Could Alys Rivers be the Three-Eyed Raven?

Since the Dance of the Dragons (the conflict between the Blacks and the Greens) takes place nearly 200 years before the war shown in Game of Thrones, Alys Rivers could very well be the Three-Eyed Raven of that time. She has shown signs of being both a skinchanger (she certainly has a bond with the owl that lives in the castle) and a greenseer (she foresaw Daemon's downfall and knows much about his and the Targaryens' past).

While there may be more than one greenseer at the time of the Dance of the Dragons, someone has to be the Three-Eyed Raven. And so far, Alyse is the best candidate.

Why do you think House of the Dragon Season 2 was poorly rated?

What does that mean for other characters?

The fan theory goes even further and wilder than that. Since the Three-Eyed Raven needs a successor, fans have speculated that Alys has already begun to shape one.

The first surprising candidate is Larys Strong, who says in Season 2 that his foot was so twisted at birth that his father accused a member of the household of casting evil spells. This mysterious household member could be Alys. And there is a theory that a greenseer must experience some sort of physical trauma in order to reach their full potential.

Another candidate, of course, is Daemon Targaryen, who has been having trippy visions throughout Season 2, not without Alys' influence. Bran Stark was given weirwood paste to unlock his powers, and the potion Alys is giving Daemon could be just that (hence all the weirwood talk).

Finally, the third less likely candidate is Aemond Targaryen, who becomes Alys' lover and the father of her son in the source novel. But whether or not this is going to happen in the series is still up in the air.
