Who killed Randall in Ransom Canyon? It wasn't the man the sheriff arrested
The crash that opens episode 1 of Netflix's neo-Western is filed as a single-vehicle accident, and Staten Kirkland spends the season proving otherwise. How the investigation actually resolves, why the first arrest doesn't hold, and what season 2 does with it.
Ransom Canyon opens with a teenager's car leaving the road outside town and the sheriff's office writing it up as a single-vehicle accident. Staten Kirkland spends ten episodes refusing to sign off on that version.
He's right. Randall Kirkland, played by Hubert Smielecki, was forced off the road by a Ford truck, and the person behind the wheel was Margaret Brigman — Sheriff Dan Brigman's estranged wife, Lauren's mother, and a woman with a drinking problem the whole town knew about. She was drunk. Kit Russell was in the truck with her, and Kit is the one who gets arrested first.
How the case actually comes apart
The investigation runs on physical evidence rather than confession, which is the one procedurally tidy thing about the season:
- The debris — Staten digs a piece of truck body out of the ground at the crash site, which is the first proof another vehicle was there.
- The repair shop — CCTV puts Reid Collins with the damaged truck, which makes him the obvious suspect for about an episode.
- The favor — Reid wasn't driving. Kit called in a debt and had him take the truck, scrape the VIN, and sink it in a lake.
- The lake — Lucas Russell finds the submerged truck while swimming with Lauren, which is how the thing surfaces, literally.
- The affair — Kit's motive for covering it up is that he and Margaret were sleeping together.
Kit takes the fall and goes into custody. Brigman keeps pulling the thread anyway and arrives at his own wife.
Kit's confession is the kind that holds up until somebody checks who was actually driving.
Why the arrest happens at all
Margaret had gone sober and moved out of Ransom by the time the truth landed, which is most of the reason Brigman hesitates. Lauren overhears the conversation that spells it out and tells her father to do his job. The season 1 finale, "Maybe It's Time Yancy Grey Dies Too," ends with the sheriff arresting his wife on manslaughter charges.
Technically nobody murdered Randall. Nobody has to for the charge to stick.
What season 2 does with it
Season 2 dropped all eight episodes on 23 July 2026 and opens six months later. Lauren is still absorbing her mother's arrest, and the shoulder injury from season 1 has taken her off the cheer squad and killed the scholarship that went with it. Dan Brigman, now a recurring rather than regular presence, arranges a spot on a Wyoming ranch for Kit — partly a fresh start, partly getting him out of town.
Randall's death isn't the only body in the finale, either: Cap Fuller, played by James Brolin, dies at the end of episode 9, before he and his newly discovered grandson Yancy have properly sorted anything out.
Netflix canceled Ransom Canyon in September 2026 after two seasons, with season 2's numbers well down on the first. Showrunner April Blair told Deadline a third season would have picked up immediately after the season 2 finale rather than jumping forward again. It's the first season's mystery that actually got an ending.
