Here's the factual answer up front: Ezekiel "Pastor Zeke" Bailey, played by Daniel J. Watts, was murdered off-screen between seasons 7 and 8. Season 8 — which premiered on Paramount+ on May 22, 2026, with episodes airing Sundays on Showtime — begins at his funeral, and the premiere confirms who was behind it: Nuck, who had Zeke killed because he feared the pastor would talk to the FBI about the money laundering running through his church.
Who Zeke was by the end
Introduced in season 6 as Kenya's father and the head of a megachurch that rivaled Pastor Stanley Jackson's, Zeke spent his early episodes as a prosperity-gospel operator with an affair, expensive tastes, and a financial arrangement with the 63rd Street Mob. Season 7 humbled him considerably — his benefactor Sarah dropped him, the money dried up, and he ended up preaching at the small family church connected to Papa, a building he had at least bought himself.
The fatal complication was his side role as a confessor. Nuck, freshly in charge of the mob after killing Douda, had been quietly seeking spiritual guidance from Zeke and confessing his crimes in private sessions. A gangster's confessions are only safe as long as the man hearing them stays silent.

The season 8 premiere, "The Coldest Winter," lays out the mechanics through Zeke's ex-wife Carolyn. At the funeral reception she tells Papa why she's certain the death was no accident:

That guy was Nuck, and Nuck decided not to take the chance. As he later frames it, he believed Zeke would flip because "everybody has a price."
