Otis "Douda" Perry ran Chicago's South Side across five seasons of The Chi and made enemies in every one of them. The season 6 finale finally settles who got him, and the answer set the show's last two seasons in motion.

The Chi's season 6 finale shows you Douda dead in the first minute and then spends the hour walking you through everyone who might have done it. The shortlist was long enough to fill a season.

Curtiss Cook's Otis "Douda" Perry arrived as a recurring character in season 2 and was main cast by season 4: businessman, head of the 63rd Street Mob, briefly mayor of Chicago. "Thanksgiving," episode 16, hit Paramount+ with Showtime on June 28, 2024 and the Showtime channel on June 30.

The opening shot, and the answer

Police stand over a body in a pool of blood in Douda's club. The camera moves in: Douda, one bullet wound to the head.

The trigger was pulled by Nuck (Cortez Smith), his own former right hand. Alicia (Lynn Whitfield) gets there first — gun already leveled at Douda's head, avenging her brother Alonzo, whom Douda murdered earlier in the season — and Nuck shoots before she can. Then he tells her to get rid of the body.

"There's a new sheriff in town," Nuck tells Alicia. She informs him she takes orders from nobody, and promises to be worse than his enemy.

Everybody who had a reason

  • Alicia — Douda killed her brother. She spent the entire season building toward the shot she didn't get to take.
  • Emmett (Jacob Latimore) — attempted a drive-by on Douda and missed; Douda retaliated by ordering him to kill Alicia, then planting a car bomb in the family car his partner and infant son would have been in if they hadn't stopped for a bathroom break.
  • Nuck — had been cutting side deals behind Douda's back, and got beaten within an inch of his life for it in the penultimate episode.
  • Everyone else — five seasons of them.

Nuck's night wasn't done. When he announced the change of management to Douda's staff, Rob (Iman Shumpert) refused to fall in line. Nuck shot him three times as he walked away and left his body on the front steps of Alicia's townhouse, where his mother found him.

Showrunner Justin Hillian told TVLine it was simply time: "It's The Chi. It's not Batman. "

What it set up

Season 7 premiered May 16, 2025 and opened with Alicia hunting her son's killer. Nuck lied about who it was, and she executed the wrong man. In the season 7 finale, "Rebirth," Douda's widow Roselyn (Kandi Burruss) returns holding a letter he left instructing her to avenge him. She goes to Nuck first; Nuck names Alicia; Roselyn shoots Alicia in her own house, in almost exactly the manner Alicia had used on the man she wrongly killed in the premiere. Rashaad and Victor find the body.

That cliffhanger opened the eighth and final season, which ran from May 22 to July 24, 2026 and closed with "The Last Dance" — the end of the longest-running Black drama in premium cable and streaming.

For the record: Hillian has said Douda was originally supposed to die back in season 2. Cook was good enough that they kept him. He got four extra seasons and a term as mayor out of it.
