A character named in whispers for two seasons of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finally walks on screen in the show's last four episodes. Here's who Damien Penwulf is, who plays him, and how one casting choice reshaped the Russo family tree.
First, the spelling: search engines see a lot of "Damian Pennwolf," but Disney 's official spelling is Damien Penwulf. Whichever way you type it, he's the answer to the question the show teased longer than any other — who is Billie's father, and who did Alex Russo marry?
The character existed as a name, a wedding ring, and a casting announcement for most of the show's run. Then Brandon Micheal Hall showed up and played him for exactly four episodes.
Two seasons of setup
The buildup was unusually slow even by Disney Channel standards:
- Season 2 finale, "The Wizard at the End of the World: Part Two" — the show reveals Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) is Alex Russo's daughter, and drops the name Damien Penwulf for the first time: Alex's husband and the son of the villain Lord Morsus.
- The wedding ring — Alex wears one in a flashback in that same finale. David Henrie, who plays Justin and executive produces, confirmed the marriage to Decider afterward.
- The casting — Brandon Micheal Hall was announced for the final season, with the character debuting in the show's concluding four-part event, which aired on Disney Channel on August 4, 2026, and hit Disney+ the next day.
So the "name only" stretch lasted from the season 2 cliffhanger right up to the last week of the series.

Who Damien actually is
Damien is a former dark wizard, raised by his father Nicodemus Penwulf — better known as Lord Morsus (Tobias Jelinek) — to follow the family business of evil. Meeting Alex changed the plan. The two fell in love, Damien turned on his father, and they married and had Billie.
The memory wipe that powers the entire series premise was Damien's idea — he proposed erasing Billie from everyone's minds, his own included, to hide her from Morsus.
When Billie's powers started fulfilling an end-of-the-world prophecy, that spell scattered the family and set up the whole show.
Where he'd been hiding
In season 3, Billie and Justin track Damien to Wizcatraz, the wizard world's maximum-security prison — where he'd locked himself up voluntarily as one more layer of protection for his daughter. Billie breaks him out in the episode "Billie Russo-Penwulf and the Prisoner of Wizcatraz," and he greets her with the nickname "Billie Bug."
From there, the finale runs the full board: the Russos battle Nicodemus, Alex survives an on-screen death fakeout, Billie voluntarily gives up her powers after being named the most powerful wizard in the world, and the series closes with the reunited family — Damien included — eating together at the Waverly Place sub shop.
Who plays him
Brandon Micheal Hall, a 1993-born Juilliard graduate, is best known as the lead of CBS's God Friended Me (2018–2020), where he played Miles Finer. He also voiced Cyborg in the 2021 animated film Injustice.
Guest role or not, Hall enters the franchise as Selena Gomez's on-screen husband — a job title 20 years of Disney casting never filled before.
For the record: fans have already built theories that Damien appeared earlier than anyone noticed, pointing to the Penwulf Herald light seen around the character Winter. The show never confirmed it. The spelling debate, meanwhile, rages on.
