Lanterns might be quietly teeing up Batwoman — and Kerry Kane’s Gotham ties could be the tell for Kate Kane in James Gunn’s DCU plans.

Episode 2 of Lanterns drops the kind of throwaway detail that lights up fan radar: Sheriff Kerry Kane says she left Gotham for Nebraska “on a whim.” Up to that point, the Rushville law officer — played by Kelly Macdonald — looked like a small-town foil for the Green Lanterns’ investigation. Tie her to Gotham, though, and suddenly she’s standing a lot closer to the Bat-family ’s front door.

The breadcrumbs started even earlier. In Episode 1, Kerry tells someone on the phone to “tell Barb ” hello — a tiny moment that outlets including Forbes and ComicBook.com flagged as a possible nod to Barbara Gordon. Add her last name, Kane, and the internet did the rest: could Kerry be connected to Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman?

The clues so far

  • She’s a Gotham native who moved to Rushville “on a whim.”
  • She casually mentions “Barb” on a phone call — potentially Barbara Gordon.
  • Her surname, Kane, matches Kate Kane — better known as Batwoman.
  • In the present-day story, she’s the local sheriff working with — and sometimes against — Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Here’s what’s text, not theory: DC describes Kerry as the Rushville sheriff whose path crosses with the Lanterns. What the show has not said anywhere is that she’s related to Kate or that Batwoman is part of this storyline. There is no official announcement connecting Macdonald’s character to Batwoman.

“finding out you’re a Disney princess.”

That’s how Kelly Macdonald told Entertainment Weekly the Gotham reveal felt when she learned it was part of Kerry’s backstory.

How it fits the DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran have laid out a connected DCU where characters can move between projects. Their initial slate included The Brave and the Bold as the new DCU Batman movie, set to feature Damian Wayne as Robin and make room for members of the wider Bat-Family. That framework easily accommodates a Kate Kane down the road — but it doesn’t confirm she’s being introduced on Lanterns.

There’s also a current DC comic headlined by Kate Kane as Batwoman, which keeps the character in the spotlight but doesn’t guarantee a live-action DCU arrival. As of now, Lanterns itself hasn’t stated any family connection for Kerry, and there’s no official tie to Batwoman on the record.
