Where is Marshals filmed in Montana? The scenery is the same ground Yellowstone used for its first three seasons
Marshals puts Kayce Dutton back on screen against mountain country that looks exactly like early Yellowstone — because a lot of it is the same real estate. A county-by-county look at where the CBS series actually shoots, why the production went where it did, and what that means for season 2.
Marshals — full title Marshals: A Yellowstone Story — premiered on CBS on March 1, 2026, with episodes hitting Paramount+ a day later. Luke Grimes's Kayce Dutton leaves the ranch for an elite U.S. Marshals unit, and every frame insists you're in Montana: mountain passes, ranch country, snow on remote two-lane roads.
Most of it is Utah. Which, for this franchise, is less a trick than a homecoming.
Where the cameras actually are
Season 1 filmed from roughly August to December 2025 — under the working title Y: Marshals — in and around three northern Utah counties, per the Deseret News, with a reported $52 million budget for 13 episodes and backing from the Rural Utah Film Incentive program. The map:

- Summit County — the production's base and Montana's main stand-in, supplying the ranch exteriors, valleys, and action- sequence terrain.
- Park City — town scenes and landmarks, including the Boneyard Saloon standing in as the exterior of the show's Bullet in Barrel bar.
- Utah Film Studios — the Park City complex at 4001 Kearns Boulevard, with three soundstages totaling about 45,000 square feet for interior work.
- Morgan and Wasatch counties — additional road and ranch photography.
- Montana itself — a small share of establishing shots and exteriors, so the state on the title card isn't entirely absent.
The Yellowstone of it all
Longtime viewers recognized the terrain instantly, and for good reason: Summit County and Utah Film Studios hosted the first three seasons of Yellowstone before that production moved to Montana for seasons 4 and 5, chasing better tax incentives than Utah was offering at the time. Marshals simply moved back to the original ground — same county, same studio, same double act of the Wasatch Mountains playing the Rockies of Big Sky Country.
The franchise has now filmed Montana in Utah, then Montana in Montana, and is back to filming Montana in Utah. The one constant is Montana getting the credit.
Utah Film Studios' other tenants over the years — Wind River, Damsel — explain why the region reads so effortlessly as generic mountain West. Some fans on social media insist they can tell the difference, arguing real Montana has a broader sky; others called the Park City photography cinematic and left it there.
Season 2 stays put
Whatever the sky debate settles on, the producers have voted. Paramount Television Studios announced in June 2026 that season 2 had started filming in Park City, with work continuing across Salt Lake, Summit, and Wasatch counties ahead of a fall 2026 premiere. The show it's extending was CBS's biggest swing of the spring — 20.4 million multiplatform viewers across the first eight episodes, with Taylor Sheridan among the executive producers, Spencer Hudnut running the room, and Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill carrying over from the mothership alongside Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, and Riley Green.
Counting Yellowstone and Marshals together, Kayce Dutton has now spent six seasons of television living in Montana — and shot four of them in Utah.
