AMC's Manhattan spinoff opens as a hostage exchange and turns into a three-season negotiation between a widow and the man who killed her husband. Here's the setup, how each season plays it, and where the show stands now.

The premise fits in one sentence and has stayed uncomfortable for three seasons. Maggie Rhee's son has been taken into Manhattan, and the only person who knows the kidnapper is Negan.

The Walking Dead: Dead City premiered on AMC on June 18, 2023, created by Eli Jorné as one of the spinoffs that followed the flagship series. Lauren Cohan plays Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Negan, the two characters at the center of the original show's most brutal episode. In the season seven premiere in October 2016, Negan beat Maggie's husband Glenn to death with a barbed-wire baseball bat while she watched. Dead City picks up years later, in a Manhattan cut off from the mainland and run by whoever can hold a block.

The setup

Hershel, Maggie and Glenn's teenage son, has been kidnapped and taken into the city by a man called the Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former member of Negan's Saviors. Maggie tells Negan she needs him because he knows how the Croat thinks. The real terms of the deal are simpler: the Croat took Hershel as leverage, and the ransom is Negan himself. Negan has troubles of his own, with a marshal from the settlement of New Babylon, Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles), on his trail.

That gives the first season its engine. Maggie is walking Negan to the man who wants him, Negan believes he's on a rescue mission, and the audience knows more than he does. In the finale he figures it out, runs, and ends up with Maggie's knife at his throat. He gives in, walks to the Croat as Hershel passes him going the other way, and is delivered to the Croat's boss, the Dama (Lisa Emery).

Forgiveness stays off the table for all three seasons. What the show keeps testing is how long Maggie can stand next to Negan without reaching for a knife.

How the three seasons play it

Each season shifts the balance between them a little further, and none of the shifts are permanent.

  • Season 1 (2023) — six episodes in the ruins of Manhattan, with Maggie and Negan working their way toward the Croat and the larger operation behind him. The partnership ends the way Maggie planned it from the start, with Negan handed over in exchange for her son.
  • Season 2 (2025 ) — eight episodes from May 4, 2025. Negan is working inside the city's power structure, Hershel is back with his mother and not happy about it, the Croat dies, and Maggie comes very close to killing Negan before walking away.
  • Season 3 (2026 ) — eight episodes from July 26 to September 13, with Seth Hoffman taking over as showrunner from Jorné. The new arrivals include Aimee Garcia as community leader Renata, Raúl Castillo as her brother Luis, a doctor, and Jimmi Simpson as Dillard, a bar owner convinced he can talk to walkers. Emily Kinney turns up as Beth Greene in an alternate-reality episode.
  • The finale, "Tenebrae" — Dillard seizes the community, kills Renata and forces Negan to stab Maggie. Negan offers to sacrifice himself, Maggie refuses to let him, and both of them survive.

By the end Maggie is running the community and Negan is its head of security, which is about as close to a resolution as these two were ever going to get. The final exchange turns it into a working relationship with a to-do list.

"I'm glad you said yes, because I've got something I need you to do," Maggie tells Negan in the closing minutes.

Do you need to have watched The Walking Dead?

It helps, mostly for one scene. Everything between Maggie and Negan traces back to Glenn's death, and Dead City treats it as something the viewer already carries in. Past that, the spinoff has preferred to build its own cast and its own city over bringing back familiar faces, and Kinney's single alternate-reality episode is the exception.

AMC hasn't announced a fourth season. Before season three aired, Morgan called it the show's "best season by far," which is a reasonable opening position for a renewal conversation.
