What happened to the mom in Sterling Point?
The twins on Prime Video's Sterling Point grew up with one sentence about how their mother died, and the island spends eight episodes proving it isn't true. Here's the version the adults agreed on, and what actually happened to Goldie Campbell.
Annie and Connor Jacobson were raised on a single explanation for their mother' s death, and it takes them one summer in Muskoka to find out who wrote it. The people who did are still in the room.
Megan Park's eight-episode series premiered on Prime Video on 5 August 2026, and the setup is an inheritance: 17-year-old Annie (Ella Rubin) and her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo) inherit their estranged grandfather's island in cottage country, and discover there's a third heir they've never met. Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) has lived at Sterling Point her whole life. She is also their sister.
The story the twins were told
Cancer. That's the cover the family settled on, and it held for seventeen years because the two men who built it — the twins' father Steven (Jay Duplass) and their grandfather Gordon — both had reasons to keep it standing.

What actually happened to Goldie
Goldie Campbell died in childbirth, delivering Ramona, on the island. The route there:
- The adoption — Goldie and Steven adopted the twins, Annie and Connor, and raised them in New York.
- The summer at Sterling Point — Goldie went back to her father's island, reconnected with her high school boyfriend Joe (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and decided she wasn't returning to her marriage.
- The lawyers — Steven arrived with legal representation once he understood she intended to stay and keep the twins. Her affair and her plan to withhold the children weighed against her, and custody went his way.
- The pregnancy — she was too far along to travel. Labor brought complications, then an emergency C-section, and she died during it.
- The story — Steven and Gordon agreed on the cancer explanation and stuck to it.
The parentage twist the finale saves for last
For most of the season the show lets you assume Joe is Ramona's father, which is the reading the island itself encourages — he's there, he loved Goldie, and his son Ellis is the boy Annie falls for. The finale reveals Steven is Ramona's biological father, which reframes the custody fight as something closer to a man trying to hold a family together and losing anyway. Brit + Co's 2026 breakdown called the switch "shock value" compared with the Joe version, which is a fair complaint — it also explains why Ramona was raised on the island by a grandfather rather than collected by a parent.
"It's not just mourning the past; it's mourning all the moments you're going to miss in the future," creator Megan Park told TheWrap in 2026, describing Annie's grief sequence.
Where that leaves all three of them
Connor wants to sell. Annie, after recovering a memory of her mother that turns out to be real — a moment from when Goldie was pregnant with Ramona — refuses. The season ends on an exchange: Ramona goes to New York with Connor and Steven, and Annie stays at Sterling Point with Ellis.
"A pretty bold choice for both of them," Park said of the swap in the same 2026 interview.
Amazon renewed the show on 20 August 2026, fifteen days after it premiered, off reviews that landed at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76 on Metacritic. The Los Angeles Times credited it with "a rare, real, unhurried sense of time."
For the record: the island scenes were shot in Muskoka, Ontario, which is where the show is also set — unusual for a Canadian shoot doubling for nowhere.
