On Prime Video, The Love Hypothesis honors the plot but the romance wobbles

The movie opens exactly where readers remember: Olive, half-blind and battling her contact lenses in a Stanford lab bathroom, walks straight into Adam Carlsen. From there, the adaptation leans hard into déjà vu. It ’s packed with page-to-screen echoes that feel like Easter eggs for anyone who dog-eared their copy.

The fake-dating setup arrives with its academic stakes intact — Adam’s grant drama and Stanford bureaucracy — and even tiny flourishes make the jump. The film stamps the meet-cute’s date as October 24, hits the coffee-shop “practice” date, and trots out the no-nonsense ground rules. Friendship energy is there too, with Anh nudging Olive into situations she’d avoid and Malcolm bringing the chaos.

Here’s the big shift: on the page, Adam’s been in love with Olive for years before the charade starts. On screen, we watch him fall. He softens beat by beat — showing up for her work, reading her nerves, trying (and often failing) to look like someone’s boyfriend. That change gives the character a visible arc, but it also swaps out the book’s pent-up tension for a slow-burn discovery. Less “a man sitting on a secret” and more “a man figuring it out in real time.”

It helps that the film lets Adam be spectacularly, endearingly awkward. The forced smile, the mangled compliments, the way every feeling seems to get peer-reviewed before it hits his face — those bits play. But without the knowledge that he’s been gone for her all along, the silence reads as shyness rather than pressure building under the surface.

Chemistry check

Rom-com math only works if the leads spark, and that’s where the movie wobbles. The much-memed book moment often dubbed “Chapter 16” shows up, right down to Adam calling Olive “edible,” but the temperature doesn’t spike the way readers will expect. The ingredients are present; the sizzle is faint.

There are tender grace notes — Adam coaching Olive through her presentation, sticking close when she’s overwhelmed, literally lending a hand at the clinic — yet the in-between spaces don’t hum. You want lingering looks, breath-catching pauses, that “oh, they’re done for” awareness. Instead, especially after the midpoint, the romance feels like it’s advancing because the plot says so, not because the room got warmer.

The final act compounds it by hustling through a lot of story without giving the emotions time to settle. In quick succession, the movie moves through:

• Tom’s escalating involvement in (and misconduct around) Olive’s research
• Adam heading out for a flight
• Malcolm’s dust-up — and détente — with Adam
• Olive searching for a new lab after Tom’s gross proposition
• Anh’s heart-to-heart with Adam
• Adam confronting Tom
• The inevitable confession and tidy happy ending

Individually, these beats work; strung together at speed, they play like a greatest-hits reel. The movie is remarkably faithful to the book’s moments but less sure about stitching them into a single, rising emotional line.
