How does Jack Ryan season 3 end? Everything comes down to two warships facing off in the Baltic
Jack Ryan's third season ends with an American destroyer and a Russian one closing on each other in the Baltic Sea. Here's what the Sokol Project actually is, how the standoff gets resolved, and what it costs the people who stopped it.
Eight episodes of assassinations, a stolen warhead, and a fugitive CIA analyst running Europe without a badge all narrow to a single stretch of water. The finale, "Star on the Wall," spends its last half-hour on two ships pointing weapons at each other.
Spoilers from here. Season 3 premiered on Prime Video on December 21, 2022, and it 's the season where the show finally went after the Russians — not Russia exactly, but a handful of Soviet-era holdouts operating without their own government's knowledge.
What Sokol is
"Sokol" is Russian for falcon, and it refers to both a Cold War project and the weapon it was meant to produce: a low-yield battlefield nuke invisible to radar and therefore untraceable. The plan around it was drawn from a real Soviet war game called Seven Days to the River Rhine — destabilize Eastern Europe with assassinations and disinformation, then detonate a deniable device and use the chaos as a pretext to reclaim territory.
The season opens in 1969 with Russian soldiers executing the Sokol scientists to bury the program. Luka Gocharov (James Cosmo) relays the order. One soldier, Petr Lebedev, refuses — not out of mercy, but because he believes in the weapon. Luka shoots him and leaves him for dead.
Petr survives, reinvents himself as Czech power broker Petr Kovac (Peter Guinness), and installs his own daughter Alena (Nina Hoss) as president of the Czech Republic so he can reactivate the plan. Another man in that room, Rolan Antonov, becomes a captain in the Russian navy.
The coup collapses in Moscow while Jack is still in the air
Defense Minister Alexei Petrov (Alexej Manvelov), who had Dmitry Popov assassinated to take his job, orders the destroyer Fearless into the Baltic alone with instructions to provoke the USS Roosevelt.
Two things unravel it. Greer (Wendell Pierce) stalls Petrov in person, offering him asylum and an apartment in New York or Miami, which buys time for Alena and Mike November (Michael Kelly) to reach President Surikov with Popov's widow and a recording of Petrov confessing to the murder. Surikov sends his guards, Petrov is shot dead, and the conspirators inside the government are rounded up.
That doesn't stop the ships. Petrov's orders are already at sea.
Nobody wins the standoff, which is the point
Jack (John Krasinski) can't get landing clearance on the Roosevelt, so he jumps into the sea from the helicopter, forcing the ship to retrieve him under maritime law. The captain listens but won't deviate from his rules of engagement: if the Russians fire, he fires.

The Fearless launches a torpedo. It misses.
Jack's actual asset is aboard the other ship. Luka, held prisoner by Antonov, persuades the crew that their captain is acting on an illegitimate order. They arrest him, the second-in-command takes over, and Luka radios across. When Jack asks him point blank whether Russia is at war with the United States, Luka tells him that's up to Jack. The Roosevelt stands down. Barely a shot is fired in the entire finale.
Petr, meanwhile, is already dead — shot by Luka and then left to bleed out by Alena, who pulls the tourniquet off herself after learning he had her elected purely for access.

What it costs, and what came next
Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) is named Director of the CIA and awards Jack and Greer the Intelligence Star, given for "voluntary acts of courage performed under hazardous conditions." Luka gets a letter to Jack and then a knock at his door from a man who has clearly come to kill him for what he did to his own country.
"Do not worry, I will not make this difficult," Luka tells him.
Season 4 premiered June 29, 2023, ran eight episodes through July 14, and added Michael Peña as Ding Chavez. The story then continued as a film: Jack Ryan: Ghost War opened at a Regal in Times Square on May 15, 2026, and hit Prime Video worldwide on May 20, running 107 minutes with Sienna Miller as MI6 officer Emma Marlowe. Critics were unconvinced. It sits at 43% on Rotten Tomatoes from 47 reviews, under a consensus that reads:
"Plowing through a routine globe-trotting with mechanical efficiency but little else, Jack Ryan: Ghost War reduces John Krasinski's once-compelling CIA operative to a personality-free action cipher."
