What happened to Otto Hightower? Season 3 episode 2 finally locates the cell from the season 2 finale

The House of the Dragon season 2 finale ended in August 2024 with a montage that included a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot: Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), former Hand of the King, sitting in an unidentified cell. No location, no captor, no explanation — and then a nearly two-year hiatus for fans to argue about it.

Season 3, episode 2, "Queen's Landing," answers all of it in one scene, and the answer is very on-brand for the person responsible. Full spoilers below.

Where the cell is, and who put him there

The cell is in the dungeons beneath the Red Keep — Otto spent the entire mystery imprisoned in King's Landing itself, the city he effectively ran for two kings. After the Battle of the Gullet, with Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena all elsewhere, Rhaenyra takes the capital, and Daemon goes down into the cells. There he finds Otto, considerably worse for wear, and learns who arranged it: Larys Strong, who locked up the former Hand and left him behind as a "gift" for Rhaenyra and Daemon should they ever take the city.

It's a characteristic Larys move — a hedge that costs him nothing. If the Greens win, no one need know. If the Blacks win, he's pre-delivered them a high-value prisoner and redirected the new queen's anger toward someone other than the escaped Aegon. Both outcomes covered, one man in a hole.

What happens in the throne room

Daemon hauls Otto before Rhaenyra in the Great Hall. With the usurper king unavailable for execution, Daemon proposes a substitute: behead the man who built the usurpation. Otto — the architect of the green council, the one who put Aegon on the throne while Viserys was still cooling — kneels and invokes the late king to Rhaenyra, muttering that her father could never have imagined this. His last words on the floor of the hall:

"I did my best…"

Rhaenyra takes his head herself, and not cleanly — it takes multiple strokes. Coming an episode after Jacaerys' death at the Gullet, it plays as her formal enrollment in the war's actual rules. Moments later, Alicent and Helaena are brought in before her, which is episode 3's problem.

How he got from Hand to a hole in the ground

The chain of events, for anyone who lost the thread during the hiatus:

• Season 2, episode 2 — Aegon fires his grandfather as Hand and replaces him with Criston Cole.
• His exit from King's Landing — Otto plans for Oldtown; Alicent redirects him toward Highgarden to shore up Tyrell support. That's the last anyone sees of him.
• The silence — Alicent's letters go unanswered; Aemond tasks Larys with locating him so he can be reinstated as Hand. Larys, evidently, located him just fine.
• Season 2 finale — the cell shot, with zero context, holding until mid-2026.

Does this match the book?

Broadly, yes. In Fire & Blood, Otto Hightower is executed after Rhaenyra takes King's Landing, so his destination was never really in doubt for book readers — the show's additions are the two-year cell mystery and Larys' fingerprints on it, neither of which exists on the page. The invention gives Larys a better long game and gives Rhaenyra a named, kneeling target at the exact moment the show needs her to use one.
