What happened to Chuck Norris? The action star's death at 86

The end of an era.

Chuck Norris, the martial arts champion and action star who became a cultural icon — and one of the internet's first great memes — died on March 19, 2026, in Hawaii. He was 86 years old.

How he died

Norris was hospitalized in Kauai, Hawaii, after a sudden medical emergency. His family described it as a "sudden passing" and asked for privacy regarding the specific circumstances. A source who had spoken with Norris the day before said he had been working out and was in good spirits. Just nine days earlier, on his 86th birthday (March 10), he posted a video of himself sparring outdoors, writing: "I don't age. I level up."

His career

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962, where he began training in martial arts. He earned black belts in multiple disciplines and became a six-time world professional middleweight karate champion.

His friendship with Bruce Lee led to his breakout film role in The Way of the Dragon (1972), where the two fought in the Colosseum. Through the 1980s, he starred in a string of action hits including Missing in Action, The Delta Force, and Code of Silence. From 1993 to 2001, he led Walker, Texas Ranger on CBS, which became one of the most-watched shows on American television.

In later years, Norris became famous all over again through "Chuck Norris Facts" — absurdist internet jokes about his toughness that became one of the earliest viral meme formats. He leaned into it with good humor.

His personal life

Norris was outspoken about his Christian faith and conservative politics. He is survived by his wife Gena O'Kelley, five children (Mike, Eric, Dina, Dakota, and Danilee), and multiple grandchildren. His first wife, Dianne Holechek, had passed away in December 2025.
