Tracker wrapped Season 3 with Colter (Justin Hartley) and Russell (Jensen Ackles) digging into their father’s past — and a cliffhanger that sees Russell taking a suspicious job. Did the finale just set up another surprise cast exit?

Tracker closed out Season 3 with a little family therapy, a little blackmail, and a not-so-subtle hint that one fan-favorite might be scarce for a bit. Let’s unpack it.

Season 3 finale: what actually happened

On Sunday, May 24, Colter (Justin Hartley) and his brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) spent the hour digging into their dad’s murky past. By the end, Russell cut a deal: he agreed to take on a suspicious, borderline-sketchy job in exchange for keeping their father’s secrets buried. He called attorney Reenie (Fiona Rene) to tip her that he’d be gone for a while — but never told Colter. Classic brother move.

The season still wrapped on a hopeful note, which is notable given how many behind-the-scenes and on-screen shifts this show has weathered since its February 2024 launch.

Did the finale sneak in another cast exit?

Short answer: no official goodbye on screen. Longer answer: Russell’s choice reads like a narrative door opening for him to disappear for a bit. The Reenie call basically planted the flag — he’s heading out. Whether that means less Jensen Ackles next season is TBD, but the episode clearly set up that possibility.

The roster keeps changing — on purpose

Tracker built out an ensemble around Colter during its run: handlers Teddi (Robin Weigert) and Velma (Abby McEnany), hacker Bobby (Eric Graise), and attorney Reenie (Fiona Rene). Then came the turnover: Weigert’s character was written out, and McEnany and Graise followed not long after. Executive producer Elwood Reid has been upfront about why the show keeps shuffling the deck — he does not want a formula where the team just picks up the phone and hands Colter the answer.

"The only rule I really have of the show is each week Colter is going to come to a new place and there’s going to be a new case. How he gets those answers and what he uses on the team, that’s all something that’s up for grabs."

Back in May 2025, Reid told Us Weekly he’s pushing the show to evolve rather than drift into complacency — meaning fewer easy info-dumps and more character discovery. In December 2025, he doubled down: when a character clicks, they’ll bring them back, but the series can’t rely on a permanent, always-on-call bench. Expect more eccentric locals, more fresh faces, and Hartley playing off strong guest stars from town to town.

The one constant

Reid says the anchor is Hartley’s Colter. Viewers know the type, but Colter stays interesting because even he hasn’t fully decoded himself. Off the clock, he’s piecing together his own past — a thread the producers plan to keep tugging without necessarily spelling out every answer. Reid also pointed to one of this season’s biggest improvements: getting core characters in the same room more often, which gives the world a tighter, more connected feel.

Where everyone stands after the finale

  • Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley): Still the sun around which this thing orbits; case-of-the-week structure remains his playground.
  • Russell Shaw (Jensen Ackles): Accepted a shady job to keep their dad’s secrets quiet; told Reenie he’ll be away for a while, didn’t tell Colter. Potential off-screen stretch ahead.
  • Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene): Not front-and-center lately, but very much in the mix — she’s the one Russell called.
  • Teddi (Robin Weigert): Written off before Season 3.
  • Velma (Abby McEnany): Exited not long after Teddi.
  • Bobby Exley (Eric Graise): Also departed in that same shakeup.

Tracker airs on CBS and is streaming on Paramount+.
