The Duffer Brothers pivot to life after Stranger Things with The Boroughs, their third new Netflix series of 2026, as a picture-perfect retirement community becomes ground zero for an otherworldly threat—and an unlikely squad of seniors is all that stands in its way.

Netflix is rolling right into the post-Stranger Things era with the Duffer Brothers producing a bunch of new shows, and the next one is about to land: The Boroughs. If you read the logline and thought, wait, is this just Stranger Things with AARP cards… you are not alone. So let’s clear up what it is, what it isn’t, and where it actually fits.

What The Boroughs is (and why it sounds familiar)

The Boroughs is set in a picture-perfect retirement community where a group of seniors discover an otherworldly threat that is literally stealing the one thing they’re shortest on: time. Tonally, it reads like a mirror-image of Stranger Things — same small-town creep factor, but swapping out bikes and walkie-talkies for bifocals and early-bird specials. Also worth noting for the industry-nerd crowd: it’s the Duffers’ third new Netflix production hitting in 2026.

So… is it secretly part of the Stranger Things universe?

No. Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan asked The Boroughs showrunner Jeffrey Addiss point-blank whether the series connects to Hawkins or the Upside Down. His answer could not be more direct:

"Entirely separate worlds. I know there are some theories out there that we’re a thing. We’re not. Matt and Ross [Duffer] and all of them who make Stranger Things, that’s Stranger Things. We’re not playing in their playground. They have an awesome playground, but we’re building over here."

That shuts the door on crossover theories. If you’re hunting for hidden gates and Demogorgon breadcrumbs in The Boroughs, you’re doing extra credit.

Meanwhile, the actual Stranger Things universe keeps expanding

  • Stranger Things: The First Shadow (stage play) premiered in 2023, digging into the origin of Henry Creel. That backstory feeds directly into the main show’s final season. There’s also word the play is being filmed to air on TV.
  • Stranger Things: Tales from '85, an animated series that just dropped on Netflix, takes place between Seasons 2 and 3 and follows the Hawkins kids (plus a new character, Nikki Baxter) as fresh monsters and threats bubble up.
  • A live-action Stranger Things spinoff is in development at Netflix. Early teases suggest an anthology vibe — standalone stories about different people’s run-ins with the Upside Down and its creatures.

The bottom line

The Boroughs may look like Stranger Things’ older cousin, but it’s not sharing DNA with Hawkins. If you want the official Upside Down business, it’s covered by the play, the new animated Tales from '85, and that developing live-action spinoff. And if you just want spooky small-town sci-fi with a senior twist, The Boroughs is about to be your thing.

Both The Boroughs and Stranger Things are streaming on Netflix.
