Ransom Canyon landed on Netflix on April 17, 2025, adapted from Jodi Thomas's novels, with Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly as the marquee names. The character people actually kept searching for was the drifter with no last name worth trusting.

Jack Schumacher plays him. Here's what he's hiding.

The setup

Yancy Grey rides into town as a stable hand for aging rancher Cap Fuller, played by James Brolin. Two things are true at once: he's Cap's grandson, and he's there on assignment. Series antagonist Davis Collins (Eoin Macken) paid for his release from prison on the condition that he talk Cap into selling the land everyone wants.

"Grey" isn't his name either. It 's Fuller.

What season 1 reveals, in order

  • The stranger — no past, no explanation, hired on at the Fuller ranch.
  • The convict — sprung by Davis Collins, working off the debt.
  • The grandson — Cap is family, and neither of them announces it.
  • The bull rider — a rodeo history he doesn't advertise.
  • The husband — a woman shows up at Gracie's dance hall claiming to be his wife, on the night he plans to marry Ellie.

Schumacher knew about the last one from the start. Showrunner April Blair told him before shooting so he could play it.

"Yeah, this is his big secret," Blair told him, as Schumacher recounted to Parade in 2025.

About that episode title

Season 1's tenth episode is called "Maybe It's Time Yancy Grey Dies Too." It's the only episode named for a character, and it doesn't mean what the search traffic assumes. Yancy survives. Cap is the one who dies, leaving Yancy the ranch — at which point he turns down a $22 million offer from Davis and Austin Water & Power and proposes to Ellie instead. The line comes from a conversation at Cap's wake, and it's about burying the fake name, not the man.

Where he stands in season 2

Season 2 arrived in July 2026 with Yancy running the rival Fuller operation and expecting a baby with Ellie (Marianly Tejada). The wife, Sidney (Heidi Grace Engerman), turns out to be an ex — and a problem. She corners Ellie on a porch, Ellie falls while heavily pregnant, and the finale opens in a hospital with a placental complication that puts both mother and baby at risk. Both survive. The daughter is named Isabella. Sidney is still around.

For the record: Schumacher has said he'd like Yancy to run the ranch without spending much screen time in a boardroom. So far the show has obliged.
