Why did Coach leave New Girl? He vanished after the pilot — and walked back in three seasons later
Watch the New Girl pilot and Jess moves in with Nick, Schmidt, and Coach. Watch episode two and Coach is gone, Winston is unpacking in his room, and nobody makes a fuss about it.
That swap wasn't a creative decision. It was a scheduling collision at ABC.
Damon Wayans Jr. was already employed
Wayans was starring as Brad Williams on Happy Endings, a first-season ABC sitcom that looked unlikely to be renewed. Assuming he'd be free, he took the Coach role and shot the New Girl pilot in 2011.
Then ABC renewed Happy Endings. His contract there took priority, and Fox lost him after a single episode.
Why they didn't just recast
Producers considered it. The problem was how much Coach is in that pilot — recasting or cutting him would have meant expensive reshoots on an episode already in the can. Creator Elizabeth Meriwether went the other way: keep the pilot as shot, introduce a different friend in episode two, and let the audience sort it out.
Enter Lamorne Morris as Winston, a former basketball player and another old friend of Nick and Schmidt. In-universe, Coach moved out to live with his girlfriend Malia — which the loft treats as entirely in character, since Coach only ever leaves for a serious relationship.
The return
Happy Endings was canceled after its third season in 2013. Within months, Wayans was back on New Girl.
- Season 3 premiere (2013) — the episode is literally titled "Coach." He's broken up with Malia and needs a place to live, which mirrors how Jess arrived in the first place.
- Season 3 — announced in July 2013 for at least four episodes, extended in November to the rest of the season.
- Season 4 — promoted to series regular.
- End of season 4 — he leaves again, this time moving to New York with his girlfriend May.
- Seasons 5 and 7 — a two-episode arc, then a one-off appearance in the final season.
That adds up to 44 episodes for a character who was supposed to be a one-episode casualty.
Why he left the second time
Nothing dramatic — Wayans stayed in demand and took other work. Since New Girl he's done voice work, films, TV roles, and hosted the competition series Frogger.
The odd result of all this is that both versions of the loft worked. Winston became one of the show's best-loved characters, complete with Prank Sinatra and an unhealthy relationship with a cat named Ferguson, and by the time Coach came back there was room for both of them without anyone being redundant.
For the record: Wayans's father, Damon Wayans, played Brad's dad on Happy Endings — the show that took him off New Girl in the first place.
