Pete Davidson Finally Reveals Why He Got Sober — The Heartbreak That Nearly Broke Him
Pete Davidson got candid onstage about why he’s sober now, saying he finally committed to rehab for a bluntly practical reason — to stop blowing his money on rehab.
Pete Davidson just laid it all out in Vegas: the jokes, the rehab, the very real reason he finally got sober. The short version is he hit a wall during treatment, and his mom bulldozed what was left.
The Vegas set and the rehab gut-punch
During his Saturday, April 11 set at The Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, the 32-year-old told the crowd he went back to rehab and, this time, actually committed to it. Footage from the show made its way to Us Weekly. He explained he did the whole thing properly, including the part they call family week, where you Zoom with relatives while your therapist is there and they tell you how hard it’s been watching you spiral. According to Pete, that call was rough.
He said his mom, Amy Davidson, popped up on the screen and did not sugarcoat a thing. For context, his dad, Scott Davidson, died in the line of duty responding to the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, which has always been a heavy part of Pete’s story.
"It’s very hard to be your mom because I wake up every morning with the fear that I’ll turn on the news and see that my son has died."
That line hit him. He joked that she delivered it over Zoom from the house he bought her while he was still using, which stung and kind of snapped him awake. That, he said, is what got him sober.
Why it stuck this time: fatherhood changed the math
Pete’s especially grateful to be sober now that he’s a dad. He and his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, welcomed their daughter, Scottie Rose, in December 2025. A few months earlier, on the podcast This Past Weekend in September 2025, he said he was thankful to be clean even though he only had about a year and change under his belt. He credited Hewitt, 29 at the time, and admitted that when he was deep in addiction and not in a good headspace, he convinced himself that getting married and having a kid would fix him because that’s the model he grew up with.
Looking back, he said he absolutely wasn’t ready then. So he stopped dating to get healthy first. He wasn’t chasing a relationship or a baby; it all happened at once anyway, and he called it awesome.
Nearly three months after that podcast, Scottie was born. In January, he told Us Weekly that becoming a parent immediately changed his priorities. He still wants to do cool projects, but now everything runs through the same filter: how long will this take me away, and is it worth being away?
The quick timeline
- September 2025: On This Past Weekend, Pete says he’s a little over a year sober, grateful it’s happening now, and admits he wasn’t ready for a family when he was using.
- December 2025: He and Elsie Hewitt welcome their daughter, Scottie Rose.
- January (following month): He tells Us Weekly fatherhood is the biggest gift and everything else matters less than being present.
- April 11 (Saturday) in Las Vegas: Onstage at The Fontainebleau, he shares how a brutal family-week Zoom in rehab, led by his mom Amy, is what truly got him sober. He also jokes about realizing he needed to stop blowing money on rehab and actually do the work.
