The dust-up lands as activists and some longtime fans push a boycott of the show. Because Rowling remains an executive producer and profits from the franchise, critics argue that tuning in would support her financially; some queer creatives have also distanced themselves from the production.
This latest flare-up adds to Rowling’s long-running dispute over gender. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have publicly backed transgender people while stepping away from Rowling’s views, and she has continued to defend her stance on sex-based protections, noting that her own experiences of abuse inform her concerns about women’s safety.

Hoult’s departure was officially chalked up to scheduling conflicts tied to his upcoming work on Man of Tomorrow. Online, some critics of Rowling have speculated the broader backlash could be influencing decisions around the show, though that remains unconfirmed.
