Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan says she’ll appear only sparingly in season five, revealing on Waitrose’s The Dish that filming is already underway — but she’s eager to return to what she calls a genuinely lovely job.

Quick Bridgerton update from the ton: Nicola Coughlan is dialing back her screen time in season 5. Not a dramatic exit, more like a strategic Irish goodbye.

What Nicola said (and how much we should expect to see her)

On Wednesday, April 29, Coughlan, 39, told Waitrose's podcast 'The Dish' that production on season 5 is already underway and she will only pop up here and there.

'Season five had started filming already, so I won't be in it very much.'

She was also pretty cheerful about the arrangement, calling it a lovely job to return to and joking that these days she swings by set for a few days, says hi to everyone, and then vanishes again for a bit. Honestly, kind of a sweet deal.

Where we left Penelope (and everyone else) after season 4

  • Penelope Bridgerton (née Featherington), played by Coughlan since the show's 2020 debut, hit her big moment in season 3 with the friends-to-lovers arc opposite Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton, 33).
  • Season 4, which aired earlier this year, shifted the spotlight to Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha). Penelope and Colin slid into support mode, playing matchmaker while juggling newlywed life and first-time parenthood.
  • Penelope outed herself as Lady Whistledown and then shut the column down.
  • By the season 4 finale, the Whistledown pamphlet returned under a new, still-unrevealed author — a handoff that seems built to carry straight into season 5.

So who is season 5 actually about?

Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) takes center stage, and the show is taking a swing here: Francesca's love story is gender-swapped from the books, pairing her with Michaela, played by Masali Baduza. The choice has sparked plenty of backlash from some corners of the fandom; on the other side, the cast and creative team have been vocally supportive of bringing a queer romance into the series.

The Penelope of it all (and what that means for Whistledown)

Showrunner Jess Brownell explained to Tudum back in February 2026 that Penelope went through a major growth spurt last season. In short: she is no longer the shy wallflower who needed Whistledown as her megaphone. Brownell noted that while Penelope still believes gossip can be information — and a kind of power for people without it — she recognizes it is time to step away from that role. Which neatly sets the table for a new quill behind the Whistledown moniker in season 5.

What Julia Quinn thinks about the changes

Julia Quinn, 56, whose novels are the backbone of the show, told Us Weekly in May 2025 that she expected some disappointment over the Francesca/Michaela twist — but the vitriol surprised her. She also made the most practical point anyone could make about an adaptation:

'If you can't handle it, there's always the book. I'm not going to rewrite the book, and you can have one of each.'

Quinn also thinks Francesca's season will be a heart-wrenching, emotional run — very much in the spirit of her novel 'When He Was Wicked, ' even if the on-screen pairing is different.

Bottom line

Expect less Penelope in season 5, a new voice behind Lady Whistledown, and Francesca leading a very different kind of romance with Michaela. Coughlan is not gone — just taking a breather — and she sounds more than happy to keep dropping by the Bridgerton circus whenever they call.
