Matthew Needham jumps from Westeros to Gotham as Joker in Batman: Caped Crusader
Batman: Caped Crusader has found its Joker voice, and it’s a House of the Dragon star in the animated series from Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams.
At San Diego Comic-Con, the team behind Batman: Caped Crusader screened the Season 2 premiere and confirmed a big swing for Gotham’s most infamous villain: Matthew Needham is voicing the Joker. The actor, familiar to many as scheming court whisperer Larys Strong on House of the Dragon, joined cast members Hamish Linklater and Jamie Chung onstage with executive producers James Tucker and Geoffrey Thorne to unveil what’s next.
The Joker only flashed across the screen in the Season 1 finale — that cameo was voiced by John DiMaggio, who also plays Detective Harvey Bullock — but Season 2 makes the Clown Prince of Crime a full-on presence with Needham behind the mic. It ’s a fresh take in a show built as a noir reset of Batman’s early years patrolling Gotham.
The new voices
Alongside Needham, Season 2 brings in a mix of returning talent and new additions. The series highlighted the following names for the upcoming episodes:
- Wunmi Mosaku — Roxy Rocket
- John DiMaggio — Detective Harvey Bullock (and Joker in the Season 1 finale cameo)
- Grey DeLisle
- Zach Hoffman
- William Salyers
- Josh Brener
- Krystal Joy Brown
- Hamish Linklater
- Jamie Chung
Roxy Rocket, redrawn
Season 2 reimagines Roxy Rocket with a darker origin. Instead of the classic thrill-seeking stuntwoman-turned-thief, the new version carries a tragic past and a score to settle, voiced by Mosaku, taking over from Charity James. Co-showrunner James Tucker said the season initially keeps Roxy’s identity under wraps while Batman pieces it together during his investigation.
Needham’s casting folds a prestige-drama edge into Gotham’s rogues’ gallery. Beyond House of the Dragon, he appeared in the Oscar- winning short Stutterer, and now slides into one of animation ’s most scrutinized roles.
Season 2 launches July 31 on Prime Video with 10 episodes.
Season 1 of the animated noir series premiered on Prime Video in 2024, centering on Batman’s formative years in a grittier, pared-back Gotham. Season 2 arrives on July 31.
