James Gunn has confirmed that the highly anticipated DCU Batman film is still far from completion, with the screenplay unfinished and no release date in sight. Fans hoping for The Brave and the Bold will have to wait until after 2027.

Fans eager to see the next Batman in the DC Universe are in for a long wait. James Gunn, the creative head behind the DCU, has made it clear that the script for the new Batman film is still a work in progress. This means The Brave and the Bold won’t be hitting theaters until at least 2028, if not later.

When a fan recently asked Gunn on Threads about the movie ’s timeline, he responded candidly:

“I'm dependent on when there's an actionable script ready so there is no way of me guessing this. Also, frankly, we're well into Batman 2, and I wouldn't want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.”

Gunn’s comments make it clear that he’s prioritizing quality over speed, and he’s not willing to rush the process just to meet a deadline.

One Batman at a Time

Some fans have voiced concerns about Bruce Wayne’s role in the DCU, but Gunn was quick to address those worries. When accused of downplaying Batman’s importance, he shot back:

“I'm not at all. I think both Batman and WW are incredibly important. But I'm also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.”

Gunn’s approach is to avoid overlapping releases, ensuring each version of the character gets its own spotlight.

Another fan pointed out that Matt Reeves ’ The Batman 2, set for 2027, gives audiences a chance to see Bruce Wayne on the big screen while the DCU takes its time. Gunn agreed, replying:

“Totally true.”

This means Robert Pattinson ’s take on the Caped Crusader will return first, with the sequel scheduled for October 1, 2027.

What’s Next for Batman and the DCU

The Batman 2, directed by Matt Reeves, is shaping up to be a major event. Sebastian Stan has joined the cast as Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson is set to play a mysterious new character. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin, though his appearance will be limited to just a few scenes.

It’s important to note that this version of Batman exists outside the main DCU storyline. Like the Joker films starring Joaquin Phoenix, Reeves’ Batman movies are part of the Elseworlds continuity, separate from the new DCU canon.

Looking Ahead: DCU’s Upcoming Projects

While Batman fans wait, the DCU is moving forward with other projects. Up next is Supergirl, which will mark Milly Alcock’s first solo outing as Kara Zor-El after her brief appearance in Superman. The studio is focused on perfecting its scripts and building anticipation for what’s to come.

For those keeping track, the next few years will be packed with new DC movies and shows, but the wait for the DCU’s Batman will be longer than many hoped. Still, with Gunn’s commitment to quality, fans can expect something special when the Dark Knight finally returns.
