James Gunn says Batman’s iconic blue-and-grey suit is less important than the story and the actor, despite fans’ calls for a return to the classic look. Find out why Gunn is standing firm on his vision for the Dark Knight.

Ever since James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, revealed plans for a fresh, more comic-inspired Batman in The Brave and the Bold, fans have been vocal about their hopes for a return to the hero’s classic look. The requests have been loud and clear: a blue-and-grey costume, a yellow oval around the bat emblem, and those unmistakable white eye lenses. But Gunn isn’t budging. He’s made it clear that, for him, the details of the suit take a back seat to the story and the person behind the mask.

Gunn’s Priorities: Character Over Costume

When a fan recently pressed Gunn on social media about the possibility of white lenses, he responded,

The most requested thing would be the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him.

Gunn’s stance echoes his earlier comments, where he addressed the almost “religious” fervor some fans have for Batman’s look.

Should Batman have white eyes? That’s a big subject of conversation. It’s like, ‘Guys, that’s really what matters?’ But those are the things they care about. Should his utility belt be yellow? Should he have the yellow crest around the bat? All of that sort of stuff. None of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story.

Shifting Away from the All-Black Bat

For years, Batman’s on-screen appearance has leaned heavily into tactical, all-black suits, a far cry from the vibrant costumes of the comics. Fans have been eager for a change, hoping Gunn’s new vision would finally bring the blue-and-grey suit to the big screen. But Gunn’s focus remains on the heart of the story and the depth of the character, not the color palette or costume details.

The Brave and the Bold: What’s Next?

The Brave and the Bold is set to introduce not just Batman, but also Robin and possibly other members of the extended Bat-family. Andy Muschetti, who previously directed The Flash in 2023, is attached to direct. While The Flash had its critics, Michael Keaton’s return as Batman was a highlight for many. Muschetti’s experience with darker, more atmospheric films like IT and the Welcome to Derry prequel could make him a strong fit for this new take on Gotham’s protector.

As for who will don the cape and cowl in the DC Universe, that remains a mystery. What’s certain is that Robert Pattinson’s version will continue in a separate storyline, with The Batman Part 2 slated for 2027. For now, fans will have to wait and see how Gunn’s vision for the Dark Knight unfolds—and whether the classic suit ever makes its return.
