Jack Ryan novels in chronological order: the full Tom Clancy timeline
Jack Ryan starts as a CIA analyst, climbs through intelligence, and ends up President of the United States.
Simple enough — except Clancy didn't write the books in chronological order, and after his death in 2013, continuation authors kept the universe going.
The result: over 30 novels from the Vietnam era to the present day. Here's the full timeline.
Core novels by Tom Clancy — in story order
- Without Remorse (1993) — John Clark's origin, set during Vietnam. Ryan doesn't appear, but his father does. The chronological starting point.
- Patriot Games (1987) — Ryan's first adventure. Foils a terrorist attack in London, becomes a target.
- Red Rabbit (2002) — A few months later. Ryan is a CIA analyst drawn into a KGB plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II.
- The Hunt for Red October (1984) — Clancy's debut. A Soviet sub captain tries to defect. The one that started everything.
- The Cardinal of the Kremlin (1988) — Protecting a high-level Soviet mole. (The 2022 continuation novel Red Winter by Marc Cameron fits chronologically between this and Hunt.)
- Clear and Present Danger (1989) — Covert U.S. war against Colombian drug cartels.
- The Sum of All Fears (1991) — Terrorists acquire a nuclear weapon. Ryan races against the clock.
- Debt of Honor (1994) — U.S.-Japan tensions spiral. Ends with a game-changing event.
- Executive Orders (1996) — Ryan is suddenly president, facing crises on all fronts.
- Rainbow Six (1998 ) — John Clark leads an international counter-terrorism unit.
- The Bear and the Dragon (2000) — President Ryan faces potential world war.
- The Teeth of the Tiger (2003) — Introduces Jack Ryan Jr. and "The Campus." The generational shift starts here.

Where to start
The Hunt for Red October is the cleanest entry point. It 's the book that launched the franchise, it holds up well, and it tells you immediately whether Clancy's style works for you.
From there — publication order for the original reading experience, or chronological (starting with Without Remorse) for a straight narrative arc.
