It: Welcome to Derry’s second season is already in development, even though HBO hasn’t officially given the green light. Director Andy Muschietti is pushing ahead with the next chapter of the chilling prequel.

Fans of the sinister world of Derry have reason to celebrate: a second season of It: Welcome to Derry is already underway, despite the absence of an official renewal from HBO. While the network has yet to make a formal announcement, director Andy Muschietti is forging ahead with the next installment of the horror prequel, keeping the momentum alive for Pennywise ’s chilling legacy.

Recently, as news broke that Christina Hodson would be penning DCU ’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold, it was also revealed that Muschietti is hard at work on the sophomore season of the series. The director has been candid about his vision for the show, which delves into the origins of Bill Skarsgård’s terrifying Pennywise the Dancing Clown, as new generations in Derry confront the ancient evil lurking beneath their town.

Setting the Stage for a Darker Chapter

In a December interview, Muschietti offered a glimpse into what viewers can expect from the upcoming season.

“We can only say the stuff that's already known, like it's in 1935, 27 years before season 1 and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books,

he shared.

“It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters and some characters from this season as well, but younger versions of them.”

This means the story will jump back nearly three decades before the events of the first season, exploring a turbulent era in Derry’s history. The Depression-era setting promises a fresh cast of characters, along with familiar faces—though likely portrayed by new actors to reflect their younger selves.

Returning Faces and New Nightmares

Longtime residents of Derry, including Rose (played by Kimberley Guerrero), Shaw (James Remar), and Ingrid (Madeleine Stowe), are expected to appear in the new season. However, given the significant time shift, these roles will probably be recast with younger performers. One thing remains certain: Bill Skarsgård is set to reprise his role as the menacing Pennywise, ensuring that the terror at the heart of Derry continues to haunt viewers.

The first season, dubbed “Chapter One” in its closing credits, is currently available for streaming. As anticipation builds for the next wave of horror, fans are left to wonder what new nightmares await in the shadowy streets of Derry.

Looking Ahead to What’s Next

With the creative team already laying the groundwork for the next season, the future of the series looks promising—even if the official stamp of approval from HBO is still pending. For those eager to discover more spine-tingling stories, there’s no shortage of new TV shows on the horizon, as well as a wealth of Stephen King adaptations to revisit.
